You Got Fandoms? I Got Vids. (Part One)

Jan 01, 2006 01:03

Okay, see, here's the deal. I am the last person you should be trusting for vid recs. I deal with visual media pretty much by pretending it doesn't exist, because generally speaking it makes no sense to me. You know how most people come to fandom and fan fiction from TV shows? I came to TV shows from fan fiction, and the people who had to get me ( Read more... )

I’d like to heartily second your recommendation of sisabet’s “Icebound Stream” vid. It’s extraordinary on every level: the music, the imagery, the sheer audacity of the central concept (let’s face it, most people’s initial reaction is probably, Polar bears?!?, but as you said, these are not cute’n’cuddly critters. Not at all).

Yeah. These are polar bears that would totally rip your throat out if they weren't already so busy ripping other throats out.

Wow. For some weird reason, I came into this vid unspoiled for the polar bears (which isn't possible if you just read through her LJ entry, so I didn't bother to try), and I was just - wow. Stunned. Wow.

Based upon my love of "icebound stream" (which, oh my, reminds me of being 15 and watching DS on TV and being utterly captivated by the Frasier/Victoria relationship *and* tears my heart out in interesting ways) and the Firefly "Halleluia" (because that is totally *Mal*, that is the essence of Mal, under the psychotic humour and wry smiles and uncertain planning, there's the *devotion* and ability to *suffer* and *pay* for his beliefs and freedom, and really, my love for him cannot be textually rendered), I downloaded the SGA one ( ... )

Also, I totally meant to include the link to If I Wrote You but I got all squee-y and distracted.

Oh, wow. I love Lierdumoa's "If I Wrote You." Choosing between that and "Hello" (by Merry) and these two vids was really, really difficult - and that was with me already ruling out all the humor ones (separate category). SGA's cup runneth over with fantastic vids, and this delights me more than I can relate.

I ended up going with these two because they tell a story not just seperately but together. (I know, I know. It's a story that exists only in my mind. Um.) But, trust me, you'll be seeing those other two being recommending real soon, because oh my god.

I can't quite express how I feel about you doing recs for humor vids, because there's no font for supersonic shrieking and dancing in circles. Please do. And for when you do, you should check out z_rayne's "Jolene" for SGA.

Yay, vid recs! laurashapiro January 1 2006, 08:51:38 UTC
Thanks so much for writing these up!

I didn't realize how not-visual you are; that makes it even cooler that you're doing this. For someone who's not-visual, you managed to say a lot of detailed and interesting stuff about the vids.

Uh, yeah. I am Little Miss Not Visual - someday I will tell you about the only time I ever tried to watch a Bugs Bunny cartoon. You will laugh, I promise you.

So I am really not kidding when I say I am the last person who should be doing vid recs; a random assemblage of monkeys could do more insightful, thoughtful job of this. I mean, I'm all kinds of confident when it comes to discussing fan fiction, but I'm all kinds of hopelessly at sea when it comes to talking about vids. (This is why it was so amusing for *me*, of all people, to do the Vid Feedback Project. But the point was - if I can, really, anyone can ( ... )

I'd like to hear the Bugs Bunny cartoon story. (:

There has been at least one vid-rec community to spring up recently, the_reel, but from what I can see it doesn't get all that much traffic. I wish more people knew about it. I pimped, but in vain.

The Vid Feedback Project was *awesome*, and I hope it will have lasting impact. I'm so grateful to you, and the other participants, for putting that together.

I like the reel - I wish there was some way for people to participate - rec only LJs tend to foster a passive consumer attitude. This is a function of how LJs work, I suspect.

I started off the New Year, um. Well, with baked goods supplied by you, and that was both fun and excellent. Plus, can starting the year with baked goods ever be wrong?

Yum!

I've been looking forward to your vid recs as vids are harder to find for me than fics. Thank you!

Vids are tough to find and tough to rec; there's no real centralized source to find vids (except in Anime, Farscape, and, to a certain extent, Buffy and Pros), and recommending them involves a number of complicated issues.

I've been waiting patiently for someone to keep up an all-vids recs journal, and so far, no such luck. Which means I'll toss in the occasional vid recs set just to fill the gap. I mean, vids are fun! And cool! And everyone should see them!

the reel offers an all-vids rec journal, but you cannot just participate - you have to be assigned to a month (I think a comb of having assinged reccers and open to all works best). Crack_van does the same (assignment only) and offers vid recs the last Friday each month. Some vidders are putting together a weekly vidding newsletter that will link to individual recs and meta discussion. It should start in a few weeks.
