It's possible Sarek is talking about the fact the Vulcans and Romulans have non-iron based blood (copper-based), which is apparently rare in the Federation. If I recall this one specific novel correctly, Orions are the only other green bloods around and at TOS time, Orion isn't part of the Federation, they're mostly pirates and exotic dancers.

I see. So Sarek is saying, "I don't just have weird blood, I have EXTRA-WEIRD blood. Good luck saving MY life!" That makes sense. *nods*

I've never figured out why the Vulcan hand thing was supposed to be difficult either. It's slightly uncomfortable with my right hand, but only because I broke my ring finger twenty years ago.

The only excuse I can think of for Sarek and Amanda was that Sarek was PMSing going into Pon Farr.

I have learned from these comments that apparently a lot of people - including Shatner and the actress who played T'Pring - can't do it, which is mystifying to me. It's easy. You just, you know, do it.

And even Pon Farr could not excuse that shit. I judge Amanda and Sarek SO HARD.

Apparently being able to do it is genetic, like being double jointed, or having dimples, or the way your earlobes connect.. Many people can do it, some can't I can do it left handed With no problems(and I am normally right handed. I can force my right hand into the position and sort of hold it, but it doesn't work as well.

When I was a kid, I used to practice the Vulcan sign as I was lying in bed waiting to fall asleep. There was a bit of light from my bedroom door so I could hold up my hand and see the outline of my fingers.

\\//_

Then that got too easy so I tried other combinations:

\||/_

\\\/_

\///_

Then I would see how fast I could switch from one position to another.

Then I tried it with my right hand (which was harder because all my muscles were built up in a certain way from all the writing I did.

_\\// (etc.)

Then I practiced switching from one position to another doing both hands simultaneuously.

I never fell asleep very quickly when I was a kid so I had a lot of time on my... hands.

Hee. When I was a kid, I used to fight sleep by teaching myself to braid. (And, years later, I learned how to French braid to stave off ennui in Latin class.) If only I'd known about Vulcan Hand Exercises then!

Hehe. I used to go to sleep by multiplying by 2 over and over again (I can still go up to 8192 without thinking) but your way sounds a lot more fun!

I used to fight sleep as a kid by making up fanfic. When I finally got online in my late teens and discovered fandom it was... a little underwhelming LOL
