Today was gorgeous. I went out for a short run (shorter than usual - about 25 minutes) a little before 7, and the weather was just amazing. It was cool, the humidity was low, and it really made me feel like fall. I go back to school a week from today ( Read more... )

I'm going to try to make the cheap way happen - the problem is I'll have to settle for a Celeron processor in the box. I can't get the dumb thing to support the PIII 866 I bought - won't even POST. I'll also get to throw the new Debian distro on there.

What kind of an interface would that solution use? Like, how would the video go from A to B. Do you think it might be possible to just SSH into my box and watch the TV? That would probably be laggy - it has to be buffered a lot. Another variable is I have to have drivers for my video capture card (I have a card I'm not using).

Any good hints on where to start?

I'm not sure how it's necessarily done these days, but when I was using a PCI tuner card in linux a few years ago, it usually just used video overlay for efficiency - I don't think that would work over ssh (without a hit in performance) though I could be wrong.

I'm not sure if the USB tuners do something different or not, so it's hard to say.

I'd heartily recommend the Hauppauge line of tuner cards if you end up going that route, though - they tend to have excellent linux support and other goodies as well.

I actually have a card...I think it's pretty no-name though, so that doesn't bode well. This project is low priority in the sense that I'm not going to be spending much money on it.

I have a Hauppage card in the Windows XP Pro box downstairs. Do we think there's any way I could use that as my host machine? Am I asking the Windows question to the wrong crowd?

Hahahaha, were you watching Remember the Titans before The Ron Clark Story? Cuz TNT rocks my world and I totally watched both those movies last night, too.

No, I wasn't. I was watching the first preseason Redskins game, then Family Guy, then SportsCenter. Is this what you're doing with your few days before classes start?

I am so sad that I cannot join that group.

Also, don't you find it hard to take Matthew Perry seriously? He was such a goofy character on Friends that I can't imagine him in a real role. Haven't seen the movie though, so I guess I shouldn't comment.

Matthew Perry was actually really, really good. He was goofy on Friends, but that helped make him love-able even at moments in the movie when you weren't a fan. Also, I did some research on Ron Clark. I'd be interested to know how close the movie was to the truth.
