"Hold on a second." Mello let go of the girl's arm for a moment and crawled over to where she had dropped her crown to retrieve it to her. He pressed it into her open hand before replacing his hand on her arm. "There you go."

He shook his head-- again, nonsensically, but more out of habit than anything else-- upon having heard Luxa's question. "The house is actually pretty gigantic," he replied. "There are lots of others. It's kind of like a nice, big community around here, y'know?" He gave a dry, somewhat sarcastic little laugh. "Another interesting little tidbit of information is that pretty much everyone who's been brought here are all from... all different universes that you probably never even knew existed, so to speak. You'll see for yourself what I mean; I can guarantee you that you won't meet many-- if any-- other people from your world around here. I've heard of people finding acquaintances sometimes, but personally, I haven't met anyone that I can say with certainty is from my own world yet ( ... )

A very strange house this was, then - both in its size and its population. Nothing on the scale of Regalia, but only a score of people could live in the palace; if the population of this house could be described as a community then it was far larger than houses generally were. And people of different universes...

This... world certainly wasn't like home. Not at all.

As soon as she felt the crown return to her hand, Luxa jerked it sharply out of the Overlander's grasp, more out of reflex than much else. "My apologies," she mumbled, replacing the circlet around her head; its familiar weight reassured her, and she slid a few inches forward.

It was rather awkward to be crawling around underneath tables, the Underlander realized, after the first time she attempted to stand up and promptly smacked her head on the table's edge. Flushing with embarrassment, Luxa reached up with her free hand to navigate her way out from under the table with no more bruises to the head.

"All right," she announced, albeit quietly. "Please lead the way."

Mello had to make a conscious effort not to laugh when the girl hit her head on the table, and although he managed to suppress anything audible except for a small cough, it was likely a good thing that Luxa couldn't actually see anything at the moment. If she had, she would have undoubtedly been able to tell that he was trying to hide a laugh.

Then again, if she had been sighted at the moment, he probably wouldn't need to have been trying to hide a laugh in the first place.

He cleared his throat before speaking again. " 'kay," he agreed, "It isn't too far from here-- actually pretty close. From the room we're in now, we've just got to go down one hallway and up a flight of stairs. Then, the room we're looking for is right there."

Mello then got onto his feet and stood up-- perhaps just a little bit too quickly, considering that Luxa was holding onto him in order to navigate the house blind, but not so quickly that he would lose her-- before beginning to cross the room, at a slightly slower pace.

It was just lucky that Luxa wasn't able to see his expression, but as it was, she could recognize the sound of a stifled laugh well enough - or at least suspect what it was. And thusly, acting on her suspicions, the Underlander turned her face towards him and gave him a glare that would have been far more effective had her eyes actually been open.

"And I am to climb stairs without being able to see them," she grumbled, though her (vaguely mocking) complaint was barely loud enough to be audible, and carefully got to her feet for the second time in her not-very-welcoming welcome to the house. She would not give this Overlander - or any other she might meet here - any more reason to laugh at her. "Monsters at night, a week of light, and I cannot leave. Already I do not like this house ( ... )

Mello snickered again, this time making no attempt to hide it; it wasn't so much at the girl as it was a response to her initial reaction to the house. "You don't like it? Well, I'll let you know that you're certainly not alone there. I've got yet to meet someone who actually really likes this house. If you're unhappy, then whoever brought you here is doing their job."

He gave a slight grimace as he started down the hallway towards the staircase. As much as he disliked whoever had brought them here, he had to give them credit for doing such a wonderful job with... whatever it was they were trying to accomplish. At this point, Mello wasn't personally looking forward to getting out of the house. It wasn't as if he had anything else to look forward to. But he did want to figure out more about the situation. It was a pretty interesting mystery, if anything, and if there actually was a way out to be found, he had nothing against finding it. But he wanted to find out the reason he had been brought for; it had to have been for ( ... )

This house was really that bad, then. It sounded nearly as dangerous as her home, if not even more so - here she didn't even have Aurora to accompany her. Whoever decided it would be amusing to bring them here had a very sick sense of humor.

Had Luxa been able to see the Overlander, she would have graced him with a very dry look. Moving more quickly didn't make her regret complaining at all; she'd be out of the light sooner rather than later, and how mature of a revenge it was. "You are an Overlander," she said matter-of-factly. "You are human, but you live aboveground, not in the Underland. Therefore you must live in the Overland, and so, an Overlander ( ... )

So, then, Luxa's world was underground. That would explain why she had never seen-- or, more accurately, not seen-- this much light before. And an Overlander was someone who lived above the ground. "Interesting," Mello commented. "Then, yes, I am an Overlander-- I do live aboveground."

He took a short pause upon having reached the bottom of the staircase. "We've reached the stairs," he bluntly informed the girl. "I'm taking you up now; we're almost there." He let out a sharp sigh-- due much more to the fact that his injuries were bothering him than that Luxa was bothering him, although she had know way of knowing that when she couldn't see-- before starting to make his way up the stairs ( ... )

"Wait a moment," Luxa - well, pretty much commanded the Overlander, and reached out with her free hand to grasp the stair banister. As soon as this small task has been accomplished, she let go of his shoulder, picking up her feet carefully to stand on the first stair.

... Hm. Well. If this staircase remained even and didn't break anywhere, it seemed that the journey to the second story would be relatively simple, even blind. With a slight hmmf that could be construed as apologetic, Luxa motioned the Overlander aside and stepped up onto the next stair, at a pace that would generally lead people to believe that she could see where she was going.

This blind thing was not very entertaining, but at least she knew how to walk."Truthfully, I had not expected anyone I knew to be here," Luxa admitted, pausing momentarily in her ascent of the stairs; talking and walking was not so easy when going up, much less when going up and not knowing exactly where to go. "They would have to be missing from the Underland, yes? I have been out of touch ( ... )

Mello stopped for a moment a few steps up. So, Luxa wanted to climb the stairs by herself? Fair enough. He couldn't say he would want to be stuck clinging onto someone just to get somewhere if he were blind.
He waited for her to catch up to where he was before he began walking again, this time keeping relative pace with her. "That's good. I wouldn't go around expecting anyone, either. You'd probably end up pretty damn disappointed..."

...New York City? Huh. This was the first time here that Mello had actually heard a place from his own world mentioned before. He'd heard books from his own world mentioned before, but... cities just seemed to be a bit more significant to him. If Luxa had heard of New York, then that meant her world must have had at least some sort of connection to his own, although that connection might have been very small. And who knew? It could very well have been a different New York City that she had heard of ( ... )

"That is why I do not intend to sit around waiting for anyone I know to come and get me out," she said confidently, even as her hand slipped off the banister. Bearings momentarily lost, Luxa stopped dead, hand flailing around until it founds the cool wood of the railing again. She breathed an almost imperceptible sigh of relief. "As soon as I can see again, I will find a way out of here, no matter how long it takes or how many 'monsters' I may come up against."

Says the blind girl who panicked when she let go of the railing of the stairs. Right.Though hesitantly, Luxa continued up the staircase. At the Overlander's recognition of New York, she smiled slightly. "If you have ever been to that city, you may very well have been standing over my head." Solovet would perhaps have lectured her for revealing the Underland's location, but it was quite pointless to hide it, especially in this world - there were only five gates to enter it from the Overland, and none of them were in this house ( ... )
