He had slumped a little to the side, tray sitting next to him, chest rising and falling evenly in sleep.
The fox had been half asleep as well, nose tucked into his tail, but he woke at the sound of the laughter, ears pricking forward.
The sound didn't make sense.
It sounded like Break, and Break was gone. Gone things did not return from gone.
He rose to his feet, ears pricked forward, testing the air.
It smelled like Break, it sounded like Break. The fox made a low questioning noise, whineing low in his throat.
It sounded like Break.
There was caution in the steps as he slowly approched the laughing man, nuzzling the back of his neck and filling his senses with Break-smell.
It looked like Break.

"Don't look so baffled," he told Luffy, raising his eyebrows. "You've seen this happen before."
He stood up, retrieving his cane from a few feet away and absently stroking Luffy's muzzle.
"And you shouldn't wander away from Watanuki like that. He'll fuss and fret, and it might be one of his hobbies but it's still bad for his blood pressure," Break continued, raising his voice. If Luffy was here then Watanuki couldn't be too far.

It was Break.
His tail kept swishing, looking for all the world as though he were listening intently to every word Break was saying. He hadn't left Watanuki, Watanuki was napping against the box. He nuzzled against the hand on his jaw, chirping softly.
It was easy to forget, at time, how big the fox was. Harder to forget when said fox was going to it's hind legs to enthusiastically wash your face with little care of it knocked you down or not.
Which was what Watanuki woke up to.

Break wasn't really accustomed to large enthusiastic animals of any kind, but he managed not to fall over when Luffy tackled him. But he did have to grab Luffy's forepaws for balance, so he was in the awkward position of holding on to Luffy and trying to escape him at the same time. As glad as he was to be alive, he might be a bit more glad if he weren't being bombarded with wet sandpaper tongue.
"Luffy, don't-- there's really no need to--" But Luffy was unconvinced. Break sighed. "Honestly, you're acting like an overgrown puppy."
But he must not have been too annoyed, because he promptly gave up on escaping and tried to wrestle Luffy to the ground instead.
