For the most part, Mello had actually been sort of enjoying the day. Since the previous night had ended, nothing much had been going on-- he hadn't been attacked by monsters, stuck tied to someone, or had his mind screwed with, unless one counted the whole ridiculous paranoia thing-- and so nothing going on, he had to admit, was rather nice at the moment. Of course, though, he knew it probably wouldn't last for very long, and so he decided it would be a decent idea to make good use of this time and just... relax or something while there was still nothing to do. And so, he'd grabbed a few extra bars of chocolate out of the freezer and headed over to the small library on the first floor. It was usually one of the quieter rooms, and it did have books; although he'd wanted to relax, he didn't particularly feel like sleeping at the moment, so... perhaps he could just find a book to read or something. Unless, of course, the books just ended up putting him to sleep ( ... )

Mello startled Break so badly that he nearly fell off the shelf. He recognized the voice, of course, but he hadn't expected to hear it after the hallucinations subsided. They had subsided, hadn't they? He'd been so sure that Mello wasn't real. Maybe it was just someone with a similar voice? But Break couldn't turn around to look without falling, so he threw a handful of books off the shelf to make space for himself, and then crawled inside and peered over the edge. It certainly looked real enough. And it seemed to know him. Well, wasn't that something.

"We are~!" he called back, putting on a bright smile and waving. "It's a good way to combine reading and exercise, you know. And what are we doing in here? I didn't take you as the bookish type."

Which was true. He was still of the opinion that Mello was quite stupid. Of course, that was a useful thing to know if Mello was real. Having an idiot owe you a favour is much better than having a shrewd man in your debt; idiots were much easier to deal with.

No, Break definitely wasn't blind anymore. He had very plainly seen Mello from his new place on top of a shelf-- which he had stolen from several books-- and one of his eyes, at least, was clearly visible. ...And red, apparently, which was rather bizarre. Mello had never seen red eyes on a person before, and he had to wonder for a moment how common this was in Break's world. Or, for that matter, how common anything about Break was wherever he was from. The guy would have probably been presumed to be insane in Mello's own world, though that alone certainly didn't account for his sanity. Break didn't seem to be completely out of his mind, after all.

"I see!" Mello returned Break's wave and grinned, still eyeing him curiously. "Brilliant. Glad to know you're enjoying yourself there!" He paused for a moment as he considered Break's question. "Isn't it supposed to be a library? I came in here to read or something, Xerxes," he answered. "I can very well be bookish if I want to." He crossed his arms. "I certainly didn't ( ... )

To read or something? Well, that was a vague answer if ever he'd heard one. Well, no matter.

"Oh, a day or so ago," he said, waving and flapping his sleeve. "Blindness doesn't suit me, so I thought I'd fix it."

He slid out of the little cubby-hole he'd made and continued to scan the books, scooting slowly along the shelves. Mello was pleasant enough, so he felt safe exposing his back while dangling from great heights with only a few fingers and a tiny foothold between him and an unpleasant crash.

"Good luck finding anything worth reading, though! I'm starting to think that this library was put together as an alternate form of torture. Mmm, and if you happen to find a certain 'Alice in Wonderland', do tell me."

Mello somehow doubted Break had been serious about deciding to fix his blindness. Not as though he particularly cared; he hadn't, after all, asked a very serious question to begin with. "Well, good for you," he answered. "And how'd you go about doing that? Poured Miracle Grow in your eye sockets?"

He watched Break as he proceeded on with his shelf-climbing. He was a decent ways off the ground; If he were to slip, he realized, or if the shelf were to break, he'd be pretty screwed. Hopefully, Break really was an adequate climber, because if he wasn't... Well then, that would be his own problem, Mello supposed.

"...'Alice in Wonderland'?" He asked in curiosity. Well, that seemed like a bit of an odd choice to be looking to read... "You're looking for 'Alice in Wonderland'? As in... the book by Lewis Carroll?"

Well, no shit. That, he realized, was a bit of an obvious question. What other book called 'Alice in Wonderland' was there?
