I love Hourglass - as much as I like parts of X-Ray, Hourglass was the first episode after the terrific Pilot that gave some idea of what the show could be. A definite one for the 'must see' list, if only for the respective visions of Clark and Lex's futures.
I agree. Hourglass showed the series potential. It's definitely an episode no newbie can miss. I'm also anxious to see Jitters, Rogue, and Stray again. (I already know that Zero was the point where I may have written Chloe off as a bad friend that I hoped would never learn the secret. What she did was no different than what Lex did.)
Hi Natasha, it’s Joanna from http://www.houseofelpodcast.com/ Thanks for inviting me to join you guys over here :) I’ll post my thoughts on Cool and Hourglass when I have some more time (and then maybe I’ll go back and post my comment about the first 4 episodes). Once again - thanks for inviting me :)
You are more than welcome, J. I can't wait to read your thoughts because I'm having fun going back and getting to be all "meta" about the show from the beginning...something I've only done sporatically with the later seasons.
Hourglass is really good, but I cringed when I re-watched Cool the other day. It has its merits, and it is infinitely better than the bug episode (and what is it with CW shows doing bug episodes and failing so hardcore at them?), but even so. Hmm.
Cool is definitely better than Metamorphosis, but I like the character stuff better in the bug episode. The problem is that for someone that knows nothing of Superman, they have to watch Bugboy because of the St George box (lead) and Clark floating for the first time. Plus there were a couple good Clark/Lex and Kent family scenes that I think were important in Metamorphosis. Cool can be missed and nothing will get lost in translation.
But Hourglass is great. I just finished Craving and Jitters and will post that write up in the morning. I'm most looking forward to Rogue tomorrow and Stray next week.

I COMPLETELY agree about the Kents. They remind me a little of my family except there were 5 of us and no one was an alien.
I love Season 1 Clark so much. I love that he got to be witty, charming, smart, and just a good son. It's like they forgot he could be all of those things until Season 8. But yes, season 1 Clark was definitely a catch. And they were able to do it in a completely non-Mary Sueish way.

Yay! I'm with you on the Kent love.
Icicle certainly reminded me of Sean Kelvin. That was so LAME to me. Thank goodness the effects were so much cooler for Icicle. He still seemed like a recycled villain.
I didn't think of Mr. Freeze but you're so right! LOL!

Yeah! :) It’s good to know that I’m not the only one who thinks that: Sean Kelvin (Season 1) = The Icicle (Season 9) = Mr Freeze! (Batman & Robin O_O) hehehe I agree - the special effects were so much better for Icicle (but I still couldn’t stand him - sooo annoying! -arrrrgh…)
Re: Episode 5: Cool (part II)theclexfactorMay 21 2010, 13:32:12 UTC
OH! The "Hello citizens" was such an Anvil, I can't believe I missed it, lol. Cute.
4)Clark and Lana - astronomy and magic - the theme, which will carry into the future seasons, always associated with these two characters (Lana - the witch, Clark the alien…)
Ooh, good catch. I love going all meta on Smallville, lol.
Yeah, I was also smiling at this Clana scene...OMG what is happening? I think I’m under the spell of the old-school Smallville ;) The magic trick was really cute, and Clark is sooo abusing his powers here (again - remember Echo and how Clark listened to Lois's thoughts? Some things remain the same-hehehe)LOL, I understand. I couldn't help but smile at these scenes as well. It makes the scene in Rabid when Clark takes out Lana's picture and has that reminiscent smile on his face that much more poignant. Because I finally see what memories he's probably called up while looking at that picture and I can smile along with him

Not to horn in on the conversation but I LOVE the Lana/Clark Magic/Astronomy theme you mentioned! That is SO COOL!
Also, Lana was really getting on my nerves always talking about Whitney but I didn't even get that CLARK kept on asking about him. LOL!
I've always avoided Radiohead because of how depressed it made me. The music is gorgeous but it really taps into a place that... just dissolves me in a bad way aka TEARS. I think I'm just now getting to a place where I could listen to them and enjoy.
