I'm not sure if it matters to you, but an aspect to consider is that most of the people who are trying to kill you, are doing so because their officers told them to. And they're doing that because their political leaders told them to. Do you think that most prisoners of war actually want to kill the people who later capture them?

The most important thing about P.O.W. status is allowing for orderly surrender. If somebody expects no mercy, they are much more likely to fight a lost battle which really means more life lost.

the moment they fire a weapon it takes them out of the wanting to kill...and puts them in trying to kill. and thats is when i no longer care whether they have a deep hatred for me. they made a choice that my life was not worth what ever not picking up that gun would cost them. even if it was their own life.

a surrender not in the heat of battle is fine. but really can you say that some person that just a second ago was trying to kill you... was doing it JUST because someone ordered them to?
