Title: It Beats For You
Author:
easybeing_green Fandom: Drake & Josh
Pairing: Drake/Josh
Disclaimer: I do not own any part of Drake & Josh
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Josh's first year in college
A/N: This follows "Love on Economy" (
Part 1,
Part 2,
Part 3), which I've now decided follows "My Same" (
here). Basically, this -verse is going to include a number of fics inspired by songs that create a large story, however you could definitely read "My Same" and "Love on Economy" as stand alones, which they originally were. From now on, though, the parts only make sense together. This is technically Part 3 of a series of probably about 8, although some of those parts have parts as well, as "Love on Economy" did. When it's all done I'll put it together in a way the makes sense, but for now, here's "It Beats For You", inspired by My Morning Jacket's "It Beats For You"...
Who would see and not believe
The heart that beats the wavelength?
And who could say but never do
Things they’ve said to someone who,
Through all that’s been and all will be,
So in line, so thoughtfully,
In tune with you.
So in time for me.
Josh’s roommate was quite possibly the coolest person he’d ever met. He was easy going, funny, smooth as silk, and he had an easy swagger that attracted everyone’s attention, female, male, young, old. He was fairly similar to Drake, actually, except in the place of Drake’s musical talent, and where Drake severely lacked, Benj had incredible intellect. He was perpetually curious and wanted to soak up everything he possibly could, which made him listen thoroughly and intensely to anything anyone had to say. Because of this, people loved him. He was the ivy league version of Drake, and Josh was pretty sure he’d have a huge crush on Benj, if he wasn’t totally and completely in love with the real Drake Parker.
Benj had arrived early in the morning, which woke up the sleeping boys, snuggled on Josh’s bed. He didn’t even seem fazed, though. He just dropped his bags on the floor, pushed his hair out of his eyes, smiled excitedly, reached out a hand before they could even get off the bed, and said “Hey! I’m Benjamin, but call me Benj. Which one of you is Josh?”
Stunned, the boys sat up slowly, and Josh reached out and shook this Benjamin’s hand as he said, “I’m Josh.”
Benj smiled and shook his hand enthusiastically. “Cool, great to meet you.” He turned his attention to Drake. “And you are?”
“Uhh…” Drake said, with his mouth open. He turned to Josh, unsure of what he should say.
“This is, uh, this is Drake,” Josh had finally offered.
Benj smiled and shook Drake’s hand as well. “Cool. Nice to meet you, too.” He then walked towards his bags and began unpacking. Drake and Josh looked at each other, mouths hanging open in shock and confusion. They listened to Benj talk about how his flight had been delayed, and then he met this girl, and “well, ya know”, he said with a smirk. They sat and listened for a while. Benj had a lot to say. But nowhere in conversation did the question, “So, Josh, new roommate, why do you have some boy in bed with you?” come up. Josh found this odd, but was relieved, so he didn’t question. Finally, it was time for Drake to go to the airport, and they left Benj to continue unpacking.
“So was that your boyfriend?” Benj had asked when Josh got back from the airport. Saying good-bye to Drake was easier than he thought it was going to be. He figured it was because he knew it wasn’t really good-bye. It was just a, “see ya later!” Benj had now finished unpacking and was sprawled out on his bed, reading some book.
“Uh, well, kinda, yeah, I guess…it’s complicated.”
“Yeah? How so?”
“Well…” Josh wasn’t sure if he should lie here, or just go for the truth and hope Benj didn’t freak out. He decided honesty was the best policy, and he knew he was awful at lying anyway. “He’s my stepbrotherbut,” Josh added the “but” quickly, expecting some sort of reaction from Benj, but there was none. “Our parents got married when we were fourteen, and, I dunno, we just kind of, I dunno, something just happened.” Josh was waiting for something terrible to happen at that moment, but nothing did. Benj just shrugged and smiled and said, “Hey man, love is love, right?” Josh smiled in amazement and relaxed as he sat down on his bed. “Yeah, yeah it is.” He was going to like this Benj.
Josh and Benj became quick friends, and he discovered that Benj described himself as “sexually fluid.” It wasn’t uncommon for Benj to disappear with some girl or guy, or both, or basically anyone who talked to him when they were out on the weekends (during the week he was focused on his studies). Josh was used to it from the days before he and Drake were officially Drake&Josh. He remembers always feeling a little sting in his heart whenever Drake would kiss a girl right in front of him or walk away to some place secluded where Josh knew other things would be going on. With Benj though, he just shook his head and chuckled. Even more amusing to Josh though, was the first time Drake came to visit. It was in late October, although it felt like it had been decades. Drake was still working on recording his album, but they were actually a little ahead of schedule, so he had a little time off, and he immediately knew he would be going to Boston to visit Josh.
They were at some party of this guy in one of Josh’s classes, and Drake wasn’t sure what kind of party included alcohol and intelligent conversation, but he told Josh he would give it a try. Drake actually liked Josh’s friends a lot. Sure, he got bored whenever they started talking about some dorky thing from class, and they used a lot of words Drake didn’t understand, but they were friendly and unpretentious. Drake and Benj hit it off really well, as Josh had guessed they would. But when some drunk girl had come up to Benj and he started talking about the imagery of something as a metaphor for whatever in some book Drake had never heard of by some author with an unpronounceable name, and she said “That’s so hot,” and proceeded to make out with him right there in the middle of the room, Drake scoffed disdainfully, and Josh couldn’t help but laugh out loud. When Drake asked why he was laughing, Josh just stared at him and said, “Uh, you’re kidding, right?”
Drake widened his eyes and raised his eyebrows as he shook his head a little, confused by Josh’s question. “No.” Josh burst out laughing. “What?” Drake said, a little irritated. Josh just continued to laugh and held his stomach as he wiped away a fake tear. Drake folded his arms across his chest and turned away childishly. “Aw, come on,” Josh said, taking a step to him and draping his arm around his shoulders. “He’s you!”
“He is not!” Drake said defensively. Josh pulled back and stared at him like, “come on.” “Ok!” Drake said as he flailed an arm and gave in. “But he’s not me now.” He pointed for emphasis. Josh smiled and stepped back in to pull Drake forward by the waist.
“I know,” he said affectionately as he leaned in gave Drake a soft, quick kiss on the lips. When they pulled apart Drake leaned into Josh’s touch and lightly nudged him with his elbow.
Stubbornly, like a little kid, he said, “I could be though, ya know.” Josh rolled his eyes. “Seriously! You’ve got like, the hottest boyfriend ever, plus I’m probably the best kisser in like, the whole world. You’re spoiled, Josh Nichols,” he finished as he pointed at Josh and proudly folded his arms across his chest again.
Josh rolled his eyes again, but kissed Drake’s temple. Drake smiled happily and leaned into Josh.
Josh knew Benj would not be returning to the room that night. When he and Drake got back to their room, a little buzzed and almost bubbling over with desire, the door was barely closed before clothes started to get ripped off and mouths attacked skin and hands groped and tongues explored and moans escaped and incoherent profanities were shouted as Drake and Josh reunited. It had been far too long.
New thoughts arrive
So in time for me…
Make believe and overthrow.
Just believe and you can do.
It felt like years until Thanksgiving break. Both boys had been busy, but they always found time to talk on the phone or online, and Josh always loved Drake’s little texts, sometimes saying I love you, sometimes complaining about something in the studio, sometimes just random thoughts that pop into Drake’s head that he feels he just needs to share with Josh. And of course, as Drake’s manager, Josh had been very involved in the whole recording process, but unfortunately, that required more interaction with the record label than Drake himself. Josh still liked being a part of it though, and he was a little sad when the album was finished in mid November. He was glad he would be going home for Thanksgiving soon.
Drake was waiting for him at the airport, and as soon as they caught sight of each other, they practically sprinted towards one another. Drake leapt into Josh’s arms and Josh spun him around in one of his big, lift-Drake-off-his-feet, hugs. He set him down, but they clung tight. Drake closed his eyes and squeezed. It had been far too long.
Thanksgiving break came and went too fast, and when Josh got back to college he went straight into preparing for finals mode. Drake spent most of his time in L.A., preparing for the release of his album. It was due out around Christmas, but “Makes Me Happy” was doing pretty well, and the name “Drake Parker” was slowly starting to be recognized. He did a lot of shows in L.A. to get the word out and had even done some interviews for some music magazines and websites. Neither boy really talked to Audrey or Walter or Megan at all during those weeks, their lives were so hectic. There was nothing, however, that could prevent them from speaking to each other. In fact, speaking to each other was probably what got them through everything. Josh was always amazed at the fact that whenever he felt like school was going to eat him alive and he just couldn’t stare at a text book anymore or sit in a library with stressed out, pulling at hair, breaking pencil, ivy league perfectionists anymore, Drake would call. Drake was equally astonished that whenever a show didn’t go too well, or the people at Spin City Records started treating him as a product instead of a musician or person, or he was just getting lonely in L.A., he would hear from Josh. Whenever one felt it had been far too long, the other would just know, and pick up the phone and fix everything.
Everything started to feel like “far too long,” though. Even though they had talked the night before, when Josh came home at Christmas, they would say it had been too long. When Josh went back in January, it had been far too short. It was far too long when Drake came to visit in February and surprised Josh on Valentine’s Day. It was far too long when Josh had spring break in March and followed Drake around on tour for a week. Any time they spent apart felt like lost time. It was almost sad how much they needed to be around each other. But it was just far too long. So in April, Drake bought a place in Boston.
