Title: Love on Economy (3/3)
Author: easybeing_green
Fandom: Drake & Josh
Pairing: Drake/Josh
Rating: PG-13
A/N: First of all, you can thank my professor's tooth related issues causing class to be cancelled and starting my weekend early for the quick update with this, and also everything everyone else has written today for getting me out of my funk. Also, I hate that I did it again; I took a lighthearted, fun story and ended it with total sappy-ness and seriousness. This is also kind of turning into an epic thing...this series is done, but there's going to be another series that takes place a little after this.
Summary: Drake and Josh on an airplane

I’m off like an airplane
I’m catching my second wind again
I’m using my left brain and I’m righting all my wrongs

The boys had separately made their way back to their seats, and despite their attempts at normalcy, their wrinkled shirts and mussed hair and goofy grins on flushed faces made them look pretty obviously freshly fucked. It was also pretty obvious that the people in the back, seated near the bathroom, knew exactly what had been going on, and the aisle seat man looked incredibly uncomfortable and disturbed. Drake found this highly amusing, and his gaze would wander off mid conversation and he would smile and chuckle as he looked at the hunched over, leaning-as-far-away-from-Drake-as-possible, nervous man. Josh would jab him and tell him he wasn’t being polite, but a smile would spread across Josh’s face as well.

Somehow they managed to discuss mundane (as mundane as their conversations got, anyway) things for the majority of the flight. They fell straight back into their usual behavior. It was the same as before Drake had made the biggest mistake of his life. Josh attributed this to how comfortable they were with each other, while Drake didn’t think anything. It was when the captain announced they were starting to make their initial descension into Boston, though, that Josh realized that things weren’t the same. Things weren’t necessarily going to be bad, but they were different, and he and Drake had to discuss exactly what was going to happen. In addition, Drake had no plan once they arrived in Boston. He didn’t even have anything with him but the clothes on his back and his wallet, which was most likely empty, save some ticket stubs, his license, and Walter’s credit card.

“You have to call Mom and Dad as soon as we land,” Josh said. The aisle seat man nearly choked on his water when he overheard this. He looked as far away from them as he could and shifted uncomfortably as he continued to cough. Drake shook his head and smiled. He could explain, but he knew even if he did, there are very few people that would understand their special situation. Maybe he would find it weird if it were two other people, but they were uniquely Drake and Josh, and they just worked. That was why he didn’t really want to respond to Josh right now, because he knew that once they started talking about serious things, the inevitable, “So what are we going to do?” question would come up, and Drake didn’t really know. He just wanted them to continue working.

“Yeah, yeah, I know,” he finally said.

“What are you gonna do when we get to Boston?”

Drake shrugged. “I dunno. Watch you unpack?”

“Don’t you mean help me unpack?”

Drake paused and glanced around. “No, I mean watch.” Josh narrowed his eyes at Drake. He caught Josh’s look and after a moment said, with a flail of the arm, “Oh give me a break, I just jumped on a plane to profess my love to you. Being the most romantic guy in the world is tiring.” Josh’s expression softened and he smiled lightly, as he refrained from pointing out that he wouldn’t have needed to jump on a plane if he hadn’t ended it in the first place.

And there it was. The whole “what are we going to do about it?” thing.

“So what happens after?” Josh asked.

“After what? You unpack? I don’t know, it’ll probably be around dinner time, I guess -”

“No. I mean…after, after,” Josh said, intimately. Drake looked up at him. He wasn’t quite sure what to say. Obviously he didn’t want them to be over, but he’s not sure how staying together worked. They looked at each other affectionately, but almost apologetically, both at a loss for words, for at least a full minute.

“Ladies and gentleman, this is your captain speaking, we are approaching Boston.” The plane started to descend, and Drake and Josh were still just looking at each other. When it hit the ground violently, they jerked in their seats and were forced to break their gaze. They turned forward in their seats and held onto the armrests as the plane roughly slowed down. On the armrest that they were sharing, Drake moved his hand to cover Josh’s. Josh squeezed Drake’s hand in response as both of their gazes remained forward. The plane finally came to a stop, and as the aisle seat man practically jumped out of his seat, Drake and Josh remained still, holding onto each other’s hands. They weren’t sure what was going to happen, but they knew they would always be able to hold on to each other.

Well how can I guess by the subject of the best predicate that’s left unsaid
When the matter is too delicate, my loneliness is evident
And it’s you, you’re running through my mind

They had gone through baggage claim, the taxi ride, and all of Josh’s pre-moving in activities in silence. It wasn’t awkward, just quiet. They didn’t even respond to the odd looks Josh got that were asking, “Who is this guy with you?”

They got to Josh’s room and were relieved to find that his roommate had not arrived yet. Josh began unpacking immediately, folding his boxers and placing them neatly in the top drawer of the dresser supplied for him while Drake plopped down on the bed. After Josh had finished with his boxers he moved on to folding his socks. Drake sighed dramatically and stood up to walk over to Josh. He took the pair of socks Josh was holding out of his hand, forcing Josh to look at him. Josh gave a quick, weak, but genuine smile. Drake sighed again, and tossed the socks back into Josh’s bag. He took Josh by the arm and sat them both down on the bed.

“Josh,” Drake began, afraid Josh thought he wasn’t serious about everything he had said on the plane. “I wouldn’t have come after you like this is I didn’t want to find some way to make this wo -”

“I know,” Josh interrupted as he looked up at Drake. “I know. I just…it’s not gonna be easy, Drake.”

Drake shrugged and said nonchalantly, “It’s always been easy to love you.”

Josh smiled, as he was sure he always would when Drake said he loved him. “I know, I love you too, but that’s not what I mean. It doesn’t just take love.”

“Ok, well, I don’t really know what it takes and I don’t really know what we’re supposed to do now, but I know that whatever it is, we can do it.” When Josh only looked down in response, Drake knew what his reservation was. “I can do it,” he amended.

Josh looked up to find Drake looking at him with pleading, worried eyes. “I know,” he said softly.

Drake let out a little breath of relief. “Ok. So. What do we do?”

Josh shrugged. “I’m not really sure either. I guess, we do what every long distance couple does. We talk on the phone, we visit when we can, we stay committed to each other, and we don’t stop loving one another.”

Drake chuckled. “Couldn’t even if I wanted to. We’re stuck together forever, buddy!”

Josh returned the laugh and continued, more optimistically, “Plus, I’m still your band manager. Turning you into a rock star requires a lot of correspondence.” Drake smiled and leaned in to give Josh a quick kiss. When they pulled away, the air in the room was noticeably different. It was filled with hope and love and thoughts about the future they would have, together.

“Hey, call Mom and Dad?” Josh said as he stood up and began folding again.

“Oh, yeah.” Drake pulled out his cell phone and started dialing their number.

“Oh, and hand me that bag?”

“Dude,” Drake said as he waited for Walter and Audrey to answer the phone. “I meant everything I said today…that includes the part about the watching,” he said as he gestured around the room. Josh made a face but Drake just smiled that satisfied smirk of his.

Josh had nearly finished moving in, with no help from Drake, who sat on his bed and distracted him with inane conversation topics and ate the majority of the pizza they had ordered for dinner, and his roommate still hadn’t arrived. It was getting late, and the boys were getting sleepy. After Audrey and Walter had scolded Drake for taking the credit card, they calmed down and had actually seemed a little pleased that Drake accompanied Josh to college. They got him a return ticket for the next day, but he was going to have to stay with Josh for the night. The boys didn’t mind this arrangement.

Josh sprawled out on top of his freshly made bed and Drake snuggled up next to him, draping an arm around Josh’s chest and nuzzling his head in the crook of his neck. Soon they would be drifting off to sleep, and even though Josh would have some explaining to do to his new, probably petrified, roommate when he arrived, the only thing Josh could feel at this moment was complete and utter comfort and contentedness.

Dreamer, you might be the soundest sleeper tonight
Sleep tight, and build your nest upon my shoulder.
