Making money may make the world go round, but I think it's sad a person has to resort to something like this. I understand that there are no "real" original stories anymore- plots, etc. are borrowed from other stories. But in modern times where fanfiction is prevalent, I just feel like this is a legit form of cheating in the writing/publishing world. She says the two stories are completely separate from one another, yet if one is to put them side by side, that is definitely not the case ( ... )

I agree with you on everything-it's a sad world we live in, if I may say so-but the "we can't prove it". 50SoG was compared to the original fanfiction, MotU. Phrases, sentences, even pages, were literally the same, save names of course. 89% was identical.
It frustrated me at first, but all I can feel now is pity for the woman. If writing really is her passion, then she might as well give up now. She'll never be respected as an author, she's lost that by publishing 50SoG.

Anyways, my general comment is this: she based it on Twilight (okay, I write Twi-fanfic too), then barely changed anything (lazy) and published it, claiming it was completely changed and original (pathetic).

Tehnically, her actual books are legal. None of them have Meyer's characters (at least their names) so no one can really say anything about it, if you look at it in the black and white of things. And if Meyer chooses to let her have her fun, then good for her. She seriously lucked out in that aspect.

Oh, this travesty is on twitter, tumblr, ning sites, etc. Its got fic writers hot and bothered. I never read it, but the bits and pieces I've seen quoted from it sounds pretty bad to me. It may not be illegal, but I find it really lame and lacking morals to do this. She's banking off of Meyer's success, for sure, and if I were SM I'd be pissed. There are so many good writers out there. I know quite a few trying to get published (myself included) and it's all original work. It's not easy to create a world and characters from scratch and how many of us will get recognition like that?

It certainly is cheating, IMO. We know most E/B women are rabidly obsessive, so really, couldn't have been hard to get that following. It's pathetic. Way to work hard like others actually do. If Rob or Stew even consider this, I'd lose any respect I had. But while this crap occurs, gotta say L4D is right... society has appaling taste in entertainment, so this does not surprise me. They don't care if it's bad porn.

I feel exactly the same way. As far as I'm concerned it is plaigarism. I have a story that I would like to convert but I would take out the mannerisms and speech patterns that so identify these characters. I also have original characters of my own. I'll probably never see it published because I don't do SMUT! Apparently that' s what sold this book. Ig I was Meyer, I would sue the pants off her.

The story was AH and OOC, which I don't really consider "fanfic" to begin with. It was a grotesque story E L James made up in her head with Eddie and Bella's faces attached, but had nothing whatsoever to do with the saga as written by Stephenie Meyer. I am actually reading the book now. *cringe* Not proud. Had to see what all the fuss was about.
My only problem is with "Jose". Really BITCH E L James?? REALLY??? She made him a sloppy, slimey character who is nothing like Jacob in the saga. But then... nothing is like the saga. Especially Eddie actually having sex. That is a laugh-riot to me. It is for that reason I am able to disassociate myself from its fanfic beginnings and see it for the piece of crap erotica that it is ( ... )

Thank the lord! I was sure I'd pissed someone off. lol I just don't understand why this has so many real fanfic writer's panties in a twist. Even Stephenie Meyer doesn't seem to give a crap! Even she finds the correlation between these characters and hers laughable.

At first I was irritated by the news because I thought it would affect fanfiction authors' ability to continue writing fanfiction. I'd heard from a few blogs that if this sort of thing continues to happen, the fandom may be affected. That doesn't seem to be happening, though. As long as SMeyer is fine with it, I don't think people should make it a problem. I'm not saying that's the most morally sound choice to make, but. Everybody involved seems happy enough.
