The Name Game

I have a WIP that is currently entitled Spent My Nights Counting Stars. I came up with that title for the story about 10 months ago. I even made a banner for way back then (don't judge me; it's part of my creative process). And at that time I was all like..."This title is amazing. A pure stroke of genius. I'm in luuuuurve." I even have plans on ( Read more... )

The title is very important. its how people come to recognise the story and how you identify it within your own head. though i don't put a lot of concentrated thought into coming up with titles. they usually just come to me through the writing process. and no, i've never bothered to check whether the title or a variation of it has been used before. cause if you came up with it by yourself, then you should still be able to feel guilt-free ownership over it.

though granted, that has never happened to me before, so i can't say for sure that i wouldn't get all huffy and feel the need to change the title if somebody had already used it before.

It's not as worried about the title seeming unoriginal as I am as about it being easily confused with other stories. Because, like you said, it's an important identification factor.

I seem to have a liking for my Twilight fics having one word titles. Cuts the confusion I suppose. Although I'm still patting myself on the back for 'meet me in the light of the sun'. It's weird though, because all my Avatar fics so far are like...5-7 word titles. Maybe it depends on the fandom. Different fandom, different vibes, different writing style. Therefore a different kind of titles.

hee hee. an evil part of me likes having long titles just so people have to continuously write out the whole thing when they are reccing or putting it in awards and so forth.

Titles are important for me especially if they're smart. I don't know, I get that "Ahhhh!" sound in my head after I finish reading and the title was something clever. I usually add the title after I finish the story. (I was trained that way, I guess.) And like >likexaxdove, I also stick with one word titles. :)
