Nothing quite like using the Christmas break - the only time I have when I'm not going to be working 11- and 12-hour days - to try and contact a whole bunch of people who might be able to transition me to better opportunities ( Read more... )

I dunno - I mean, I'd be quite happy with nonstandard hours, or an early morning / late evening shift. I can't imagine I'm the only one.

They're not. In their defence, only eight of those hours are on their clock, but I live a long way away and there are factors preventing me moving closer at the moment. Eight percent of my in-pocket pay goes on fuel, and nearly forty percent on rent, and they're paying me below market rates because the company is run on the principle of pouring the maximum amount of money into the managing director's yacht and the original founders' retirement funds.

Given that their annual profit is in the high eight figures, you can imagine how thrilled I am at scraping by. Not to mention that if you factor in all the hours I spend a week doing things related to work (ie, hours I can't spend doing other things), the after-tax rate is less than half what I've been paid before for being a level one helpdesk operator.
