First of all, the notion that the "empire or nation-state" is contingent upon cooperation is prima facie ludicrous. Read up on yer Weber for fuck's sake. The state is the entity with a monopoly on the "legitimate" use of force. And don't even get me started on Weber's empirical notion of legitimacy. Hah! Trying to infer psychological states of consent from the physical behavior of acquiescence, lol. Especially when such acquiscence comes from an internal fear of prosecution and the state's use of force? It's funny, normally when someone holds a gun to your head, we would say that the coercion inherent in the act would negate said consent, but when the all magical state does it?
