Unless you are literally going to run away and go underground, it is always best to get in touch with your creditor before they take you to court. If you have help you can often get a lot of the debt written off if you are smart.

See? We can agree on something.

Dealing with Creditors

Too bad this stuff isn't disseminated widely. People need to know.

People know. Spend some time in the bankruptcy/pre-BK and "dealing with creditors" forums.

If you're sitting on piles of money and just stopped paying your bills because you didn't WANT to pay them, maybe. Have you personally known anyone in that situation? I sure as hell haven't.

If you have help you can often get a lot of the debt written off if you are smart.

It's got nothing to do with being smart. When there's no money, THERE'S NO MONEY. When you can barely cover rent, much less food, where does a person come up with $2k to file bankruptcy? Or a lawyer to fight the lawsuits?

There is NO dealing with the majority of creditors in this situation, and your "Let them eat cake" attitude smacks of someone who has NOT been there, and hasn't a clue what it's like.

Capital One declined to comment on Ms. Weaver’s case. “We encourage anyone facing difficulties meeting their financial obligations to contact us right away,” Tatiana Stead, a bank spokeswoman, said in an e-mail message.

And that's absolute bullshit. They don't care.

No, they care. But only about you paying them and not about whether or not you can eat while paying them.
