I got peeved five minutes in. Ten in, and I got angry at how Danny has somehow become the comic relief - and by comic relief, I mean how all characters have free reign to laugh at him for his legitimate concerns, as if he's merely a baby throwing a tantrum and shouldn't be coddled. I mean ... not wanting your mom to go on a ride-along is a perfectly reasonable response.
Seriously. Every single character takes equal opportunity to mock Danny and I am so beyond tired of it.
Also, yes to everything even though I haven't seen the whole ep yet.
Danny has been the comic relief for a long time, but he was the comic relief for the audience, not his friends. Having his friends mock him every time he's genuinely bothered by something is totally inappropriate. That's not buddies. Or ohana.
ETA: I forgot to add how much it annoyed me that everyone knew about Clara's ride-along except Danny. They thought he was being all unreasonable about his mom doing a ride-along, but I think it bothered Danny more that everyone was making these plans for his mom and never even mentioned it to him.
It does rather speak to them colluding in some way because they knew he wouldn't like it. What kind of friend a) sneaks behind someone's back for anything other than a good surprise and b) makes sure to tell everyone what's going on so that the person looks like a chump
( ... )
That's okay, carry on. There's so little post-episode discussion anymore.
And I totally agree that the writers need to do a better job of setting up these new arcs instead of randomly pulling them out of their asses at the last minute. Does Steve really not have enough already established trauma to draw from that they needed to retcon this whole Freddie thing?
I mostly agree with all of this. but the thing about Steve asking Catherine if it was okay for Jerry to stay with him: it's Steve's house so he doesn't have to ask if someone can crash there. I don't think Catherine was living with him. Just spending lots of nights there and subsequently waking up there.
Steve owns the house and he's not required to ask her permission, but even if she's not living there, she spends enough time there that this is a decision that affects her too, so it would be considerate to talk about it with her. I know I wouldn't want to have sexytimes with my boyfriend when the guy who's been making awkward sexual remarks to me is sleeping in the same house.
Sadly, everything I watched the show for (clever banter, creative stunts, ohana feels, cast screen chemistry, and the friendship between Steve and Danny) has largely disappeared. Every now and then there will be a good scene that gives me hope that the show can turn itself around, but then nothing ever comes of it.
I got thrown completely out of the episode the moment Steve called after his nightmare and I thought FINALLY Danny's going to have a meaningful scene again, cause Steve is ready to admit he has some shit to work through and then they cut to Steve'n'Grover (even though I have to say Danny was a great hope, but I knew Grover was coming because of the previous episode's set up of course). And never mind the left-fielding of important goings-on that continue to rattle me but not surprise with the writer's rooms abysmal track record of thinking it's a good idea to assume people will fill in the blanks of off-screen story development, what really pissed me off is the fact that I feel more and more like they're screen-testing us for the feasibility of just full on replacing Danny with Grover (because supposedly Scott wants out or they want him out is frankly the egg and the hen at this point) and I admit I like Grover and all, but if you're going to do a switcheroo that's supposed to be as phased in and stealthmode looking at Scott Caan and

I confess the idea of Scott leaving fills me with both dread and relief. Dread because unlike TPTB, I remember the Danny of S1 and adore what's left of him. Relief because then I can give up the show with a clean fan conscience.
I kind of feel the same way, and I know exactly what you mean. Even though I didn't really have a favourite of the original four-tier-team, Danny was totally my favourite if you know what I'm talking about. I originally got on board with the show because of the awesome team dynamic as a whole with everyone of them contributing their unique skills and experiences... but I especially liked Danny as a POV-character, I still hands down prefer fic where he fills that role too and I feel now that we've been relegated to a Steve-has-sidekicks-that-do-exposition-he-hasn't-got-time-for-show, it's all falling apart and that makes me sad, because this had the makings of cult classic.
I think Danny is/was the glue and no one in charge seemed to realize it (or want it that way - Leading Man is supposed to be the glue). I promise, PTB, the audience will still understand it's all about Steve even if you give the rest of the characters some meat.
Scott Caan has never made a secret of disliking Hawaii...I get the feeling that he is sort of being phased out. I have noticed that there are fewer and fewer scenes between Steve and Danny. I think Scott renegotiated his contract for this year--he has been in fewer episodes and has less screen time with Alex. If he continues to be on the show in season 5--if we have a season 5 (and I'm pretty sure we will)--that he will be in even fewer episodes. I really miss the show of season 1---that's the show I fell in love with. This is all my opinion....nothing I have read anywhere else. Just my observations.
I'm of two minds about that. On the one hand, he made a commitment and should live up to it. Happiness is not required. I'm not delirious with joy over every aspect of my job either, but I still show up and work a full day every day.
On the other hand, if he really is that miserable and the production is willing to let him go, they should just write him out completely instead of marginalizing the character season after season and hoping we won't notice (or will like it).
It's a sad state of affairs when I get more ohana feels from Grimm these days than I do from this show.
