The thing with Danny thinking the cop in this particular episode, I think, was that so Steve could be right. Because, honestly, no that long ago their arguments would have been reversed, and you cannot have the second banana being the one that's right. Lead guy is right, always. It's a formula. I would also have much more support for Cath on the team if 1) it hadn't been her boyfriend just handing her a badge because she needed a job and 2) they agreed to part ways, romantically. And giving her the badge to cover her ass actually lessened Five-0's security, IMO.
Grover isn't wrong. But don't worry, he'll drink the Kool-Aid soon. Or get dead.
He didn't used to be. And, frankly, it's been getting kind of boring with Steve always being right and everyone else always being wrong.

I really wanted a scene with Steve saying something like, "Hey, I talked to the governor and he says we need to hire someone to fill Kono's spot on the team. You're the most qualified person I know and you also get along with the established team members. Would you like to come work for Five-0?," instead of just handing her a badge like it was a Cracker Jack prize.

One of the things I liked so much about S1 was that Steve wasn't always right. Sometimes, gasp, someone from the team was or, double gasp, they worked as a team.
Season 1 was more about a team of equals who each brought something unique and useful to the team. Season 2 onward has been about Steve and the people who work for him.
very very true assessment. I really can't believe that rule-thumper!Danny really stood by and gave Cath a pad on the back for joining the team without so much as a 'whu, you did what?' and 'Kono?!?'. I have the same quabble with the thing, which apparently is Lenkov's perception of 'organic'. It DOES a disservice to Cathrine's character, who I could see melding with the team really well (much better than Lori did anyway) but the right thing to would have been that Steve realized finally what a highly qualified asset she is, offering her the the position as the dues for all those little favours she did them and after mulling it over and deciding to let go of their mismatched and unbalanced romantic entanglements, she would go and become a friend and a team member. THAT would have been organic and a chance for her to grow into her own instead of being played up as the never-actually-confirmed-girlfriend who apparently moved in with Steve because she then conveniently didn't have to search for her own place off-Navy, apparently got a job

On another note, folks have been saying that viewing the 'conflict of interest' angle between Cath/Steve right now as highly problematic is a bit hypocritical when so much of the fandom would happily see Danny fall into bed with almighty!steve without any consideration for that can of worms. Those situations are different. For one thing, Steve and Danny are not canon and I never thought they would be. They're called 'slash goggles' for a reason, and if I don't want to harsh my personal romantic fantasy with realities like fraternization rules, or homophobia in the law

Indeed, and I understand that people can be romantically involved and work together (however, law enforcement is clearly a whole different animal than most lines of work in that respect) but that is just some blatant favoritism that is unbecoming of Steve's character as well. The writers are doing HIM a disservice by making him an insensitve daredevil who has no regard for authority and propriety in civil service, which considering where he comes from is just downright implausible. I love that they still come up with entertaining, quirky cases and fabulous action, I just wish characterization, continuity and a pinch of realism wouldn't sufer so much.
Even in areas outside of law enforcement, most organizations frown heavily on having someone be the direct supervisor of his/her partner. Hiring your significant other without having anyone else involved in the decision is a Bad Idea on any number of levels.
I can't imagine Mary being able to adopt a baby either, and I have to wonder whether we'll ever hear about the kid again. It was cute to watch Five-o take care of Joan, but Steve foisting her off on everyone else (including Max) and then trying to take credit for it was pathetic. I think they could have found a few options beyond watching a child while investigating a murder and gun running or handing her off to CPS. With all of their resources and Chin's extended family, someone should have been able to find a qualified caregiver for the day

So do I. Mary shows up at least once a season, so they'd better at least mention the kid. And I wonder when someone will tell Doris she's a grandma.
having him die because Steve didn't listen to his advice and everything went pear-shaped would be interesting
It would. Knowing this show, however, Grover will probably die because he didn't listen to Steve, and his final dying epiphany will be a sudden grasp of Steve's true awesomeness.
I feel bad for crapping on Steve, but I liked him more when he was a smart, talented guy who didn't know everything and needed his team to help him out.

That's what I'm afraid of.
