So many things to like and dislike about this ep.
Daddy!Danny is always adorable. It constantly amazes me how good Scott is in his scenes with kids of all ages, considering he doesn't have any of his own. I also loved his fairy tale about the handsome prince and the mean ogre who never lets the handsome prince ride his own beautiful black stallion.
On the other hand, how on earth was Mary cleared to adopt a baby? She can't even keep a job for more than a few months. She has a long and storied history of trying new things and then getting bored with them rather quickly. If you get bored with being a mother, you can't just hand the baby back and move on to race car driving or whatever catches your fleeting interest next.
And Steve was the primary on the babysitting op? "Primary" must be secret code for "palm the baby off on every single person I know." The only time Steve took care of baby Joan by himself was on the drive from the hospital to Five-0 HQ.
One thing I think would have been interesting to address in this ep but wasn't is how willing Danny now is to believe police officers are corrupt. Early in the series, Danny stood by Chin and Meka in the face of strong and obvious evidence of wrongdoing. That doesn't mean he was blind to corruption, because he testified against his partner Rick and took down the corrupt detective that killed Meka. But ever since Rick kidnapped Grace, Danny has been willing to think the worst of every officer after only the tiniest whiff of circumstantial evidence.
I also wish Danny had been given the opportunity to talk more about long-term undercover operations, which may or may not have been part of that big Russian mob case that got Danny's name misspelled in the papers.
Who was surprised that Catherine was given a spot on Five-0? ::crickets chirp:: Yeah, that's what I thought. Here's the thing. I like Catherine. I think she's totally qualified to be a member of Five-0. But the way it came about didn't make any sense and was a disservice to her character. Steve seriously just handed her a badge like it was a fashion accessory and sent her out for the evening. Having that badge in her hand with no accompanying paperwork or deputization didn't make her a cop, just a police impersonator. Presumably Steve will correct that oversight now that she's officially been brought on board, but if anyone ::cough:: Captain Grover ::cough:: wanted to make an issue of Steve hiring his own girlfriend for a position that hadn't been offered to a general pool of applicants, he totally could.
Speaking of Captain Grover, TPTB are trying to make him seem kind of douchey like Captain Fryer because he opposes the way Five-0 does things, but he hasn't really been wrong. Every objection he's made has been something Danny would have said in season 1. I'm just afraid that Captain Grover will turn into another Lori Weston where he'll suddenly be overcome by Steve's virility and heroism or something and wind up being an ally. Steve needs to be reminded he's not perfect every now and then. So does the show for that matter.
