Eating down the freezer

Sep 30, 2009 19:11

Okay, I need to grocery shop, and I'm the anxious sort who buys doubles when staples are on sale (and when I say staples, I'm including Fluff, frozen basil lumps and baker's chocolate). Because of my false-memories-of-a-Depression-childhood-lifestyle, sometimes I squirrel away things to the point that I can't remember when I bought something, and I ( Read more... )

Heh. My f-list runs in themes; here's B's (public) post which is only a half a scroll away from yours: http://bearsir.livejournal.com/351998.html.

Your dinner sounds great! and you are braver and less wasteful than I am, but equally prone to buying things in large quantities (my excuse is that I am buying myself more freedom and time, since I won't have to go get any more tp/frozen dinner/jam/beer for another 6 months, but basically I just delight in the idea of shaving down the time spent Needing to Go Get, in a more general abstract way).

How weird is that? Must be the time of year: we're teetering between the giddy bounty of summer and the cache-y frugality of winter.

Everytime I go visit my grandmother (which is not often, anymore, but I digress) we do the same thing. She has bits of this and bits of that stashed all over the place3. We'll pull together dinner from it all and it always ends up great. Kind of like a buffet or pot luck where you get to have a couple bites of everything. No one cares if all the dishes don't "go" with each other as long as they are all yummy!

Right? I want to institute a leftover night, so we could have the fun pot-luck experience instead of the death march of having the same thing as it lingers for days.

Sweet talker.

The soup I made from our chicken leftovers is still in the freezer, but at least I remember when I made it. :)

You know, the label maker is so much fun, I hadn't realized how much I missed Mystery Frozen Lump Dinners! I used to have that at least once a week.

I even *have* a label maker. And a sharpie in a designated spot in the kitchen for just such labeling. I do a pretty good job identifying frozen leftovers, though, so I get arrogant... and everyone suffers.

Hubris. It takes us all down.

That sounds fun!
We need to eat down our freezer, too...but that is a deep chest freezer! *ack!*
I also stock on things that then I dunno when I'll use them...I'm bad. I still shop for 4 or more even though it's been 10 years of just John and I! How sad is that?
