Too easy :) I am and always have been a die hard Spuffy fangirl. I could write reams about why I love their love, but it's kind of all been said before, so I'm going to try to keep it short.
Yup. Best enemies has been my favorite sort of ship since I was Very Small. I have no idea what the first one was, tho I know Heyer's These Old Shades is one of the best enemies stories I've loved the longest.
Spike and Buffy tho are really *good* at best enemies. Really good.
I spotted a link to this and am so glad I followed it. Such a satisfying summary, and so nice to be reminded of all that makes this pairing stay with me long after any other.
I love the arc, and the pain, and the potential for a happy ending that I still firmly believe in, and the way that two incredibly complex characters fit together so well their relationship practically gained sentience and wrote itself!
Fully agreed. Well said!! (And the rest of it too.)
I love how you describe their relationship. The realism is one thing I really appreciated, too. Also, I felt like they could be honest and authentic about themselves to each other, in a way neither were with their other lovers. Probably from having known each other as enemies. There's no reason to hide their flaws, or pretend to be things they aren't.
And even though Spike acted like he put her on a pedestal, I think that's just an illusion he knew wasn't accurate, but needed due to being a romantic at heart.

Exactly this. Starry eyed romance is one thing, but something you learn as you grow up is that, for relationships to survive, you have to be honest -- first about who you are, and next about what you need. I think they really got to that point by the end, or at least were heading there.
I disagree about the pedestal, though :) He loved her above all others, obsessively even after the soul, but he never treated her as infallible (as I think Xander, and at times Willow too, did) or pure and good (as Angel did). He never held her up so high that the only option was for her to topple off (which is what regularly went wrong with the scoobies imo). I think he saw her pretty clearly, and loved her both because of it and in spite of it.
