Well, having taken 9 or 10 months to crank my way through The Crimson Petal and the White, I managed to finish off The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins in under a fortnight.

I completely agree about her style of writing. It was very fast paced with limited emotional importace ( ... )

However I read the book in a day so I could see the movie after having finished the book. (I'm big on read first watch second.) And I cried so much while reading the first two books. The third not so much although it did have its emotional moments.

Yeah, I usually read first too, but I thought I would try it the other way around this time to try an avoid the kind of disappointment I've had at times with the GoT adaptation. But then that meant I was spoiled for all the major plot points. So it might have just been that.

As far as people of color, it wasn't really mentioned in the books No, it was. Rue and Thresh are specifically mentioned several times as having dark brown skin, hair and eyes -- that says "black" to me. (I was looking out for it after the so called controversy over the casting ( ... )

Hey Moonmoth, so I've just read your review, and i liked that you made mention of the things i was looking for: the stlye of writting of the author and the sort of echo to gladiators (that really caught my attention as a history lover :P) I have a sort of general idea of what the story is about, but i guess i'd never given it a chance because i thought it was going to be similar to the Uglies books, which i didn't like one bit.. but your rewview is making me consider asking the books for X-Mas!! i'll let you know when i get them what i think about them :)

p.s. I saw that you made mention of The Crimson Petal & the White, and I've been dying to watch the mini-series with Romola Garai, but can't find it in my country or online.. Anyways, i don't know much about it so i was wondering if the book was worth reading? brithish period dramas are usually my thing, so... any comments on that? :D

Cool, glad it was helpful :) I never got around to reviewing the other two books, but they're certainly very interesting and compelling reads. Personally I think book 1 is the strongest in terms of storytelling, but I know others disagree. I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending to the trilogy, but I guess the fact that I'm still thinking about it means there's something good there!

The Crimson Petal and the White mini-series was ay-may-zing. Seriously, pay in blood if you have to! Romola Garai is just incredible. At times the story can get pretty gruesome and brutal for the women in it, but the ending is very... satisfying ;) As for my thoughts - that coloured text in the main entry is actually a link to another (fairly lengthy) review I wrote for the book. Check it out :)
