Some of you may know I recently broke up with my girlfriend. I did this via email since I'm such a big coward. I rationalized this to myself that since I had asked her out via email (a year ago on Thursday the 10th, actually), it seemed appropriate. But in retrospect it was just me avoiding conflict

FYI, I don't think you did anything wrong and I think you did everything right. Poly takes work. Better that you recognise that you don't have the resources to manage two relationships (on top of a job and a PhD) than try to please everyone and end up pleasing no-one. Least of all yourself. We still think you're a good person and you're still a friend.
