Ava had a bottle of wine chilling in the refrigerator and was tidying up her already-pretty-tidy kitchen, checking her phone periodically for the time. She was pretty used to cooking something in preparation for Rori coming over, but tonight she didn't have to, which was a little strange. Cooking always helped her burn off nervous energy--not that there was anything to be nervous about anymore, not really. But there wasn't much difference between excited energy and nervous energy, and she was definitely excited. It'd been a long, busy week, busy enough that they'd had to put off celebrating on the actual day of her birthday, and she'd been looking forward to this. Rori had sounded so eager to celebrate on the phone, which had been overwhelming--the good kind of overwhelming. It was almost a year since she'd moved down here, and her last birthday had been a lot lonelier. At the time, she wouldn't have bet on having someone like Rori in her life
( ... )
Rori smiled at her over the bags in her arms, most of which was the food. She had a couple of small presents tucked away, and oh how she hoped that Ava would like them. She’d really looked hard and long for them, as well as doing some Christmas shopping-and oh, wasn’t that intimidating this year. She’d never had a significant other, and it was scary to approach the holidays and try to figure out navigating those waters. Usually people had some experience at this point, but not her.
“If you could take the top bag, that would be great,” Rori said, shuffling in carefully mostly for Wilbur’s benefit. She really didn’t want to step on one of his little paws. She was rather fond of the pup and enjoyed playing with him when she was around. She grinned as she got a kiss, wishing now that her hands weren’t quite so full of things so she could kiss her hello properly.
“So, happy belated birthday,” she said brightly. “I hope they didn’t work you too hard at work.”
"Okay." Ava grabbed the top bag after making sure Rori seemed to have everything else in hand. She wanted to tell Rori she hadn't had to bring all this, that she really wouldn't have minded cooking up something, but it was so sweet that all Ava could do was grin some more. "Dinner smells good," she said instead once she'd had her kiss, "and you smell good."
She closed the door, not realising until then that anyone might've seen her kissing Rori in her doorway. Apartment life. She didn't think anyone had been in the hall, but still. It hadn't occured to her until just now anyway.
"Thanks. And...you know, thanks for coming. Celebrating, I mean." She laughed, feeling silly and a little flaily. "That is, I'm really glad you're here. Work was long this week, but we don't have to talk about that. I hope yours didn't tire you out too much either."
Rori grinned as Ava said she smelled good. She had only stopped by the ranch briefly and she'd showered after, so at least she knew she actually did this time. The fact Ava always seemed to think so made her grin even more fondly, though. "I hope you like it. I wasn't really sure what to get, but this place came highly recommended, so..."
The easy affection warmed her; she had realized the door was still open, but she found she didn't care nearly so much as she probably should, or at least as she once should have. "But of course. I'm just sorry we were too busy to do it properly during the week," Rori said apologetically. "And it's okay to talk about work, hope it wasn't too rough on you."
She set everything down and reached over for Ava, tugging her closer so she could kiss her much longer and more thoroughly. "Wasn't too bad," she finally replied. "Tired but not as much as the other week."
