Date: November 25, 2011 Characters: Ena Ratliff, Laine Kohler Location: Target, Fort Worth Status: Private - ish Summary: Laine and Ena go Black Friday shopping Completion: Complete
Leaving the house that morning, Ena was still amused by the look Colby had given her, it was like he knew his wife was insane and yet he loved her anyway. She had made a crack about starting Lei young and taking her with, a joke which had only made Colby hold their little girl closer to his chest while muttering 'Crazy woman, I love you, but that's not going to happen.' and shooing her out the door
( ... )
“Oh love, not a single thing?” Laine responded, giving Ena a baffled look, “Not even a few things for that wee little one of yours?” Because Laine certainly had a few things she’d like to purchase on her list for Lei, on top of a few more things she had knit earlier in the month. She had a suspicion that Ena’s little was would end up spoiled by not only her grandparents, but Ena’s siblings and cousins also.
Laine brushed off her initial reaction and smiled wide, “And if that’s the case we’ll just need to work extra hard to spend your money.” She said, heading back towards the socks. Which seemed like a funny place to start, but Renata had this novelty sock preference going currently, so Laine had decided she would start there for her sister and work towards the larger items. “Oooh, you could buy her one of those talking Elmo’s that kids are so mad about. Seems like they create a new one each year.”
"Not really." Ena answered with a shrug. "I really just come for the experience and the rush." She could admit this, mostly because it wasn't like Laine didn't already know she was a little bit of an adrenaline junkie and right now Black Friday shopping was far safer than jumping out of a plane, though the latter would happen again once Ena felt up to it.
Ena laughed and shook her head. "I don't think it will be that hard, not with the way you shop." She pointed out, knowing that Laine definitely enjoyed shopping. Without asking any questions Ena followed Laine to the socks display, fairly certain that she was starting her shopping with Renata's gifts. "No talking Elmo's, those things are creepy." Ena shuddered and made a face.
“The way I shop?” Laine shot back feigning offense, “You make it sound like I need a twelve step program.” She laughed, unable to keep the smile off her face. She didn’t think she was uncontrollable, but she probably did more shopping than some women; in her defense much of it was at thrift shops, so the prices were considerably smaller. “And it isn’t like I’m going to twist your arm into purchasing things you don’t want.”
She headed down the aisle she had been looking for, holding up a bright pair of neon green knee socks for Ena’s opinion. “Fine. No talking dolls for Lei.” She conceded, “What do you think of these for Renata? Or oh, a gag gift for Jono, since he hasn’t told me anything he wants.”
'Right, sure you're not." Ena teased, trying to see if she could get a rise out of her older cousin or not. "You have your cats at your flat, right?" She really always just expected Laine to be at holiday gatherings since neither of them had much family in the states.
Ena just shook her head. "Even if Lei decides today is the day she's going to scream for hours while Mum's gone, Colby won't complain to me about it." He'd likely mention it, but her husband just wasn't prone to being bothered by things he couldn't really control, and their little girl screaming wasn't something he could control. "Wandering and breakfast both sound lovely." She answered, relieved that Laine had found her gift for Colby. Nodding, Ena didn't think she needed to confirm they could finishing shopping later. "So onward, then?" She said as she motioned down the nearest aisle, moving down it once she was sure Laine knew which way she was intending to go.
