Mattie was about ready to burst by the time they got home from Jack's house. Jack had less patience than Lupe did so he was always on his best behavior whenever they walked over there, which had meant keeping quiet with some cookies and his NDS. Lupe knew they'd been over there awhile, though, talking about Jack's new nonprofit and things related to that, none of which were exciting for a ten year old to listen to. Hopefully painting with Max would be a better outlet for his energy. But not too good an outlet, or more things than her porch would end up with paint on them ( ... )

Max had just stared and blinked at Mattie for the barrage, but when Lupe came out, he finally found his footing. "That, and to make for an even base coat. If we left the older paint it would make the newer paint weaker, in a way. Taking it off means that the newer stuff will stay better longer."

He shrugged. "I only have one sander, and really, it's the less fun part of woodwork, so I figured if I could get it done, then it would be easier on you and Mattie."

He glanced between them. "Guessing you were down at Ruth's?"

"Plus the old stuff's all chipped and stuff. What're we doing with all this dust?" Mattie trailed a finger through some of it and held his now bluish-brown finger up, grinning.

Lupe gave a pained smile and reminded herself that the house was too young for lead to be an issue. "Well I appreciate it," she said, her smile widening. "It looks like the messier part too, especially with a child."

She shook her head, "Jack's, actually, though I guess that's the same thing. But I've been meaning to stop in and check on Ruth. She's getting out about and about more with Marianne now, I'm betting."

Max nodded. "Yeah. This way we can do a clean coat of sealant and primer." He looked at the dust. "Um, don't suppose you've a broom and dustpan?" He doubted paint dust was good for the grass. "Clean up as we go, I guess."

"Right." He forgot she'd known Jack first, though given it was the connection to Ruth he should have remembered. "Yeah, she takes Marianne to the park. And to campus when she needs to meet with profs. Not quite back to work, though she's actually wanting to. Think being so isolated is making her a bit antsy."

"So, why don't we get this all cleared off and we can start sealing things up?"
