Max had stocked up for the date, though calling it that felt weird. Lupe was a friend. But she'd won the bid, and this was a far cry better than having to dress up and go to a fancy dinner or dancing. He shuddered at the thought. He loaded his truck with his sander, painting tools and several cans of paint and primer.
He was dressed in his painting outfit, though with an extra long-sleeved shirt under the ragged t-shirt and jeans. The weather was cooler, and he would likely work up a sweat, but the temps were unpredictable, and the wind had a bite to it.
He arrived a bit early, but set to work on the porch rail, wanting to sand down the older paint to get a fresh coat. That would take the longest, and really, he wasn't going to expect anyone else to sand it all down.
It was several hours later once the sanding was done that he knocked on the door, assuming either Lupe hadn't heard him, or that she'd been busy with work. He didn't mind, so he hoped she wouldn't.
