It wasn't out of the ordinary for Jake to text her, after all didn't she text him on a far to regular basis? Sometimes it still amazed Neve that it seemed Jake had become her go to person over the last few months and she wasn't entirely sure how or when that had happened. It felt kind of nice to know he might need her for something, granted it could be something minor. But after feeling like all she had been doing in their friendship lately was 'take, take, take' it was nice to get back to a point where a conversation wasn't going to be about her issues ( ... )

Jake hadn't meant to worry Neve, and he could tell upon opening the door and looking at her that she was worried. Oh, not just anyone could tell, but he thought he knew her well enough to detect the slight signs. Also, she was a lot like him in a few ways, and he really should have realized.

"Relax, Neve," he said, grinning faintly up at her from his position in the chair. "Nothing's really wrong," he reassured. Just his little girl growing up on him and trying to figure out what the hell he should be saying and doing for her right now. "C'mon in out of the heat. Can I get you anything?"

He gestured her to the more comfortable living room.

A weight was almost lifted from her shoulders as Jake opened the door and grinned at her. Neve couldn't stop herself from wrinkling her nose at him when he told her to relax. "Right, because a cryptic text message shouldn't concern me." She remarked, though the remark didn't have much bite to it. "Nothings wrong, you just needed me to stop by when I had a moment...." Which she was not going to wonder if she had been the first person he had sought out to talk about whatever it was he needed to talk about ( ... )

"Well, I wasn't going to detail things in a text," Jake said, feeling a little guilty for having made her worry. "Besides, you know I'd call you if something really bad came up." He reached out and poked her gently, echoing his reminder. She'd be one of the first he'd call if something happened, and maybe even the first if he needed medical help. He trusted her with that sort of thing.

Jake's AC was always turned up pretty well these days. For him, temperature control was extremely important--with his physical problems, he could easily overheat these days, as sweating didn't work quite the same way. It was a pain in the ass, metaphorically at least, because he was an active man used to being active, even in the heat in summer.

He smiled at her almost ruefully as she went right to the point. "Star..." he started, and sighed, rubbing his hands down his unfeeling legs. "Star's growing up and I don't know what to do," he said almost plaintively.

Normally she might have felt just a touch guilty about badgering someone into talking about serious issues; okay, it would have been a rare moment - but Neve wasn't always pushing people to talk, usually it was only the people she truly cared about that she badgered to this degree. "Someone has to get you out of your head a bit." And that was the truth, Neve was of the opinion it didn't do anyone any good to keep everything bottled up inside; and she was just glad she could be that person that could get Jake to talk about some of this stuff ( ... )

"And you've done a really good job of it," Jake said. He really did need people like her in his life, willing to yank him out of his head when he got too introspective. He had trouble pulling himself out sometimes, because most of his normal physical outlets were now unavailable to him. He smiled at Neve, glad that he had such a good friend willing to put up with all the moodiness that plagued him some days.

"Sure you do," he said, but his eyes were dancing very faintly--she'd bullied him back into feeling light-hearted and he was teasing her again. "You just don't want to outrun a man in a wheelchair. Or risk his wheels being faster than hers." He grinned at her, bouncing back to himself with some resilience. Once someone excavated him from his mind traps, he could be more himself than usual, if that made sense. It was good to remind himself he was still capable of that, at least.

"So this is why you keep me around." Neve joked, her tone teasing a bright grin flashed across her features. "To badger you into some semblance of the Jake I knew before...." She didn't have to finish that sentence, they both knew what would come after 'before'. "It's not because you enjoy my company or anything." It was becoming clear to Neve that despite Jake's gloomy moods, she really still enjoyed spending time with him ( ... )

He found, to his surprise, that it relieved him that someone could say 'before' and it not bother him. Quite the opposite, really, it was actually something of a relief to not dance around the subject. Like permission to be sad sometimes, because it wasn't just to him that things had changed. He smiled. "Yes, like before," he agreed. He was still that person, in part, and it was good to know that despite everything he could still be that at times ( ... )
