Dess grinned as she moved up the walk to Jake's house. She'd brought a dish of cinnamon roll pie with her, even though Jake had told her before she didn't need to bring anything. She liked baking for him, and if she remembered correctly Star liked the cinnamon rolls too. And that was just a side benefit really, she didn't want to try and bribe or buy the girl's affections, but if she was going to be Jake's life more and more, then Dess at least wanted Star to not hate her.
Star answered the door when the knock sounded, to save her Dad the trip from the kitchen. She couldn't say she was thrilled at all that his... whatever-she-was... was coming over to dinner. And that she'd have to eat with them. She'd been feeling cranky anyway, but this just got on her nerves.
"Hi," Star said, pulling the door open for her to come in. "Dad's in the kitchen. Come on in." Dad had told her to be nice, and she was trying, even if she came across as a bit short and abrupt.
Dess nodded and smiled at the girl, young woman. She was growing up to be a very beautiful woman. Jake was going to have to scare all the boys away soon enough. She walked in, "Thank you. I brought some dessert for later. Cinnamon roll pie, which I don't think you've had."
It wasn't outright hostility and that was good, Dess knew she'd have to earn the rest of Star's goodwill towards her. "The kitchen's this way, right?"
Star's eyebrows climbed her face a bit and she tilted her head. "You can make cinnamon rolls into a pie?" she said, a bit disbelieving. She'd never heard of such a thing, but... it certainly was intriguing.
"Yup, straight on back. Dad! Your... person is here," she said, calling back to him as she led the way. She rather thought Dess was her Dad's girlfriend, but he'd never called her that, so she really wasn't sure how it went. "What are you two, anyway?" she asked in her normal blunt manner, only realizing after it was out of her mouth that she probably shouldn't have said it.
