Dess grinned as she moved up the walk to Jake's house. She'd brought a dish of cinnamon roll pie with her, even though Jake had told her before she didn't need to bring anything. She liked baking for him, and if she remembered correctly Star liked the cinnamon rolls too. And that was just a side benefit really, she didn't want to try and bribe or buy the girl's affections, but if she was going to be Jake's life more and more, then Dess at least wanted Star to not hate her.
Star answered the door when the knock sounded, to save her Dad the trip from the kitchen. She couldn't say she was thrilled at all that his... whatever-she-was... was coming over to dinner. And that she'd have to eat with them. She'd been feeling cranky anyway, but this just got on her nerves.
"Hi," Star said, pulling the door open for her to come in. "Dad's in the kitchen. Come on in." Dad had told her to be nice, and she was trying, even if she came across as a bit short and abrupt.
Dess nodded and smiled at the girl, young woman. She was growing up to be a very beautiful woman. Jake was going to have to scare all the boys away soon enough. She walked in, "Thank you. I brought some dessert for later. Cinnamon roll pie, which I don't think you've had."
It wasn't outright hostility and that was good, Dess knew she'd have to earn the rest of Star's goodwill towards her. "The kitchen's this way, right?"
Star's eyebrows climbed her face a bit and she tilted her head. "You can make cinnamon rolls into a pie?" she said, a bit disbelieving. She'd never heard of such a thing, but... it certainly was intriguing.
"Yup, straight on back. Dad! Your... person is here," she said, calling back to him as she led the way. She rather thought Dess was her Dad's girlfriend, but he'd never called her that, so she really wasn't sure how it went. "What are you two, anyway?" she asked in her normal blunt manner, only realizing after it was out of her mouth that she probably shouldn't have said it.
"If you know how to mix the ingredients together right, you can." Dess answered with a smile. "You'll have to let me know what you think of it. If you like it, I'll give you the recipe."
Dess started to move towards the kitchen when Star's question stopped her. It was a good question. And one that she didn't necessarily have a good answer for, well not really. "We're friends." Friends who liked kissing and cuddling and oh Lord, it felt like she was back in high school. "If we're to become anything other than that, I promise to let you know."
"Cool stuff," Star said, trying not to be pleased at the offer. She was starting to enjoy cooking, at least sometimes.
"Friends?" Star said most skeptically, in her best teenaged voice. Okay, so maybe she shouldn't pry, her Dad had his life too, but he was her business. "Please do," she said, a phrase stolen from her grandmother, as she continued on to the kitchen. She hoped that Dess wouldn't tell on her and get her in trouble with her Dad, but really, someone had to ask these things.
"It's important to keep you in the loop as it were," Dess remarked as she followed the girl. She did smile very widely at Jake as she saw him. "Hello handsome, how're you?"
He looked tired, but other than that, she was happy to see him. It was startling to think about how much she looked forward to each and every minute that she got to spend with him. "I brought dessert."
Jake looked up and half turned when Dess came in, smiling up at her from his chair. He wheeled a short distance over to greet her. "Doing all right, gorgeous. And how are you today?" he asked.
Star continued through the kitchen back to the hall toward her room, just barely managing not to stomp because that would get her a reprimand. Jake looked after her for a moment, torn between what he felt--disappointment, that she was acting like this again, sadness, that he understood why to an extent.
"Ooh, dessert. What is it?" he asked, snaking an arm around her to tug her down on his lap so he could greet her properly.
"Better, now that I'm with you." Dess replied with a wide smile at him, letting herself get tugged down to sit in his lap. "Cinnamon roll pie."
She ignored the teen stomping off to her room, it'd take some time before Star would warm up to her. Hopefully not too much time. She didn't want to cause too much trouble, but she also didn't want to give up Jake. Even if things between them were kind of fluid.
Jake nuzzled his bearded face gently against her cheek before kissing Dess lightly in greeting, arm around her waist as she slid into his lap. She always smelled so good. "Mmm, now that sounds like a promising dessert," he said with a grin. "And how are you doing today, beautiful? Sorry about Star... I'm afraid this is a pretty normal reaction." Based on the one other time he'd actually brought a woman into their lives, anyway. And that hadn't exactly ended well.
She knocked on the door.
