Isaac hadn't been as stealthy as he'd thought, but to be fair it was hard not to wake Luke up. He was a light sleeper, always had been. Strangers had kind of been in and out of the house all hours of the night when he'd been a kid, with all sorts of noises going along with it, and most of the time it wasn't the sort of noise you could just ignore on your way back to sleep. He'd not been as comfortable with strange men in the house as his mother had been, and his child-self had felt a need to look out for her as well as himself, especially when he was the only sober one around. He'd often just get up, slip into the kitchen if it was empty and read, or see if there was some food in the cupboards that he could take back to his room. Sometimes he still felt the urge to go into the kitchen in the middle of the night and make a peanut butter sandwich ( ... )

"Shouldn't tell me you're lucky to have me?" Luke shrugged, uncomfortable again, and confused. "Well you don't have to tell me that. But it doesn't scare me. We'll always be friends, Iz. I don't know what kind of future I'm going to have, or you're going to have, but you'll be in it if I have anything to say about it." He didn't see how Isaac was messing anything up. Even if there were something to mess up.

"Right, of course." He shook his head. "You shouldn't listen to me tonight. I'm addlepated and sober. Bad combination. Tell me something...something that happened at work. Anything. Fill my head up."

Anything to shut him up before he said or did something stupid.

"I like you sober," Luke tried for levity. "Hard to have a conversation with you otherwise unless I'm high too." He didn't much like smoking weed or being non-sober in general, but he'd done it occasionally with Isaac. Things were always more fun with him.

"Um. Well, I got hit on at work today," he offered. "The bookmobile lady's taken a shine to me." She was, like, seventy two or something, but.

"We can have a conversation." He protested, already feeling a bit better. "It's just gonna be about Fritos or what's on the television that we're both to lazy to turn off."

"No way?" He grinned. "Was she cute? Tell me all about it. She didn't pinch your ass did you? I told you not to let that shit get by on a first flirtation."

Luke groaned. "Remember when we watched home shopping network for three hours straight?" Of course, he'd thought it was the funniest show ever at the time. Embarrassing.

"Nah, it wasn't a pinch, more of a... squeeze." Luke wrinkled his nose at the memory. "She claimed she needed me to help load some books into her truck but I think she might've been lying."

"Oh my god, fuck yeah. What were they selling? Those like weird ass tools for hair removal. I thought I was gonna die." He grinned at him. "They were just so earnest about smooth skin!"

"Did she really?" Isaac's eyes widened. "That's sexual harassment, babe! Unless she's hot, in which case, don't report it, just tap it. Damn. And of course she was lying. Women are just as shady as men about coping feels."

"Epi-whatevers, yeah. It looked like one of those medieval torture pits you have to jump over in video game dungeons, only in miniature." But the girls' legs had looked really soft. Luke dimly remembered rhapsodizing about it, and hoped Isaac didn't.

He nodded. "I don't think I'll report. Or tap it," Luke added, rolling his eyes in Isaac's general direction. "She's harmless. And ...I'm sure she was probably really hot in her day." He snorted.

"Heh, women have it fucking hard." He shook his head. "Hair removal, can you imagine? It'd take me like weeks to get rid of it off one leg."

"Oh, poor Luke. We're you groped by Granny?" He shook his head. "See? You're so hot even octogenarians can't keep their hands off you."

Luke laughed. "No kidding. Though they have waxing and stuff. Couple of sharp tugs and some pain, and you'll be ready to join a swim team."

"She couldn't have been more than a septogenarian," Luke mused. "And ha ha ha. Guess that's one way of looking at it."

"Hell no. I never even let my mother tweeze my eyebrows and she really wanted to. Of course, she's nuts so there's that." He shuddered.

"Only way of looking at it." He patted his arm. "Anyway, I kinda hope I'm like that at her age. Fearless and groping young hot things."

"She is kinda nuts," Luke agreed. "Anyway, there's nothing wrong with your eyebrows; they're just very ... healthy."

He bumped his shoulder against Isaac's. "You're like that at your age, Iz."

He waggled them. "They're epic and you know it. I can punctuate any sentence with these babies."

"Heh. True. But I don't dupe young men into lifting heavy things for me. You know, unless I want them to help me move and I'm motivating them with drugs."

"I'm not sure if motivating them with drugs is any better than duping them," Luke pointed out, smirking a little.

"Anyway, how was your day? Going to miss tax season when it's all over?"

"I'm so fucking glad it's almost over." He scrubbed a hand over his face. "I mean, the money has been awesome and I'll miss it, but the rules and the people and the whining..I'm so over it."

"It'll be good being able to do your own thing, though," Luke said, lacing his fingers together across his stomach. "You're sort of... I dunno. A free spirit." More than Luke had ever been, anyway.
