Jack had his ball cap on, green in a mass of dark blue Air Force BDUs. Sunglasses also sat, shading his eyes from the light of the morning. His stride was such that the messhall was a siren call-- a place where he could find some sanctuary, a zen 'oneness' with the eggs and sausage that was a promised entry on the menu. And if he was really lucky?
Orange juice. Even from those little cups with the aluminum covers would be good.
It was just one of those mornings.
"Is there a giant plant taking over the encampment?" Jack slowed to hear the words, the first 'day' of his taking over the SGC coming quickly to mind. When the best thing that could be said about a plant taking over the facility was "...it hasn't eaten anybody yet.", he could see how that would be pretty much a good baseline from which to work. Didn't stop him from that inner groan, however
( ... )
Summer finished her discussion with the other botanist and looked around. She spotted the General heading into the mess and turned to head after him. It was really one of those now or never times and she'd decided on now.
Summer caught up with the General and gave him a smile, "General, good morning. I was wondering if you had a moment."
Of course before the man had a chance to actually reply Summer continued on, "Well, I was wondering... Could I call you Jack?" Once again before the man could reply Summer continued on, "Well Jack, I was wondering if you would have dinner with me tonight?"
There it had been said and Summer tried really hard not to look as nervous as she actually felt right then. Thankfully for her she had lots of practice at schooling herself given her family.
Jack straightened at the sound of his name being called, along with a well meaning, if not hearty 'good morning'. He turned slowly, and nodded his acknowledgement, "Doctor." Pretty sure she was a doctor... if she was the one that he remembered from his days at running the SGC... She looked familiar, in the 'sat in a few meetings with her' way.
"Oh sure.. I have.." He looked at his watch casually before letting it fall again, "...a moment or--"
It was the rollercoaster ride that came next that completely took him off-guard, from 'Jack' to... 'dinner'? He had to have looked as puzzled and not a little-bit dumbfounded as it all rolled through his head, standing there... and staring.
"I... uh..." Okay... not often that this happens. "Tonight?" What was Tuesday night? Wednesday was poker.. Friday, bingo. Didn't someone have something this evening?
Summer watched the response and thanked the perverse nature of her upbringing for the ability to think quickly on her feet. She held up a hand, "It's nothing really. I was just hoping to get more then botany together. Yesterday was my birthday and I was thinking of having a little cookout, party thing. There will be burgers... and cake."
Summer tried not to grimace at the mention of burgers. That one would go over well with Pip since he knew she didn't eat meat. "You can bring anyone you like. The Colonel maybe... Uhm, it's no big deal though. If you can't make it... I understand you're busy."
Good work Summer. You really fouled that one up. "If you can make it I'll see you tonight." That said Summer turned to try and flee. If nothing else she had to break the news to Pip that he'd be cooking for a bunch of people. She also had to invite botany to a party she hadn't planned to throw. At least the birthday thing was true.
