It probably would have been a weird thing for most people-- knowing so little about someone you cared for so much-- but as far as Chuck was concerned, he was okay with it. It was far from unusual to hear a knock and find Chuck outside her door, especially these last few months, but it still made Sarah smile every time. Maybe it was silly, she didn't know. Maybe that was just how these things were meant to work. Either way, as badly as she missed her old work, as useless as she sometimes felt here, there was no pretending she wasn't also happy -- far moreso than she would have believed possible just a year ago. The normal life had its perks.

Like, again, opening the door to see Chuck there. "Hey," she said, smiling. "Come on in."

"No, not at all," Sarah said, stepping back to let him in, then closing the door behind him. He was carrying something and she couldn't help being curious, gaze flickering from the package to him, but for now, she figured, she'd find out when he wanted her to. All things in due time, when that was feasible. "In fact, I'm glad you're here." The date wasn't lost on her, and if there was anyone whose company she wanted now, it was him.

Maybe he should have hidden the gift or something, at least then he wouldn't be standing there, awkwardly holding it and making it the giant elephant in the room.

"Well, I was in the neighborhood, so I thought I'd drop by," he joked, like his hut wasn't right across the way.
