Iris Chang definitely played a major role in bringing it into the Western consciousness. Of course, China's current position of political and economic influence also has something to do with it.

And so human. Apparently he had so much faith that Hitler was going to intervene in the atrocities that he was witness to, and wrote heaps of letters to Nazi officials trying to get them to stop the Japanese.

I just don't understand anything, ever, at all.

At the end of December, beginning of January, I'd watch the footage on the television (from Kenya) of people brandishing machetes and just sit there transfixed; completely horrified that there were people doing these things. With machetes. The machetes that I was seeing on the screen. To other people.
