Firefly fic: Of Necessity

Jan 04, 2006 21:27

Author's Notes: This is a Firefly ficlet written for the wonderful lunasky in the Secret Santa organised by mciac. Luna gave me the mood "Intense", and the prompt, "Man stands in his own shadow and wonders why it's dark".

Firefly, no pairing. Needless to say, AU (I hope).

There has been enough time lost. )

You - I mean - Simon - I thought.

*tries to regain some form of coherent thought process*

You had me. Until Mal spoke, you had me. I thought it was the character of Joss from the River Tam Sessions speaking. And then - chilling. So very chilling. I'll go and curl up into a ball in a corner of the room and rock slowly, now.

I am so sorry, honey. *contrite*

(Although I'm glad to hear that my little trick was effective.)

Sorry? Don't you dare be sorry! You chill me like that, you'd better be damn proud of it. *decisive nod* *goes back to Remus and his chocolate*

Oh so very goregous! Thank you so much. There's so much darkness in the Firefly verse, and yet, Simon's usually been portrayed as an innocent - which he clearly is not. I mean, he managed to get his sister out, he went against his parents, and there's no way that everything he's been through couldn't have changed him.

He's not so different from the monsters that took his sister though he says he does it for her love. But is the quest for her love and the greed that the blue-gloved men that different?

So chilling, and so tragic. I absolutely love it. Thank you so much!

Yay! I'm so happy that you liked it. I had a moment after posting it where I was like: "shit, it's a Secret Santa story, shouldn't it be happy and warm and stuff?" But I thought I'd take my cue from you quotation, which is really quite dark.

*nods* Absolutely -- girly, utterly incompetent Simon always brushes me the wrong way, because he's...like Wesley, you know? He's changed a lot because of what he's gone through, and there was always this core of steel in him. *gushes* Anyway, that's how I've always seen it -- remembering what he was doing in the pilot was threatening to let Kaylee bleed to death. River will always come first to him, and I like to push him to the limits of that, see how far he'll go.

I'm not all that familiar with the fandom, but as always I love your work--chilling, stark, disturbing. Beautifully done!

Thank you, M! My first thought was to go with the Logan-not-Aaron twist instead, but I failed miserably at writing a Logan POV. *g*

will you draw this for me? Please? Pretty please?

Only just found this, chica, sorry! *begs forgiveness* I'm a bit lost as to what the visual accompaniment would be to this story... but if you have mind-candy to share, please do, and I'll do my best.

I just had the thought that with the internal monologue (or external journal, however you think of it) and some semblance of plot, it actually fits the structural requirements of a comic better than that other story. ;P Even better: you don't really have to draw Simon at all, that would just give it away; you just have to suggest him.

You do realise that what you see in your mind and what I put down are likely to be two very different things? As long as that's all right with you...

"Suggest", huh? That will be a change from my usual "ram down throat" style. I'll have to think about it more. *pets brain in commiseration*
