Well, you do have a point there, but I tend to go by the way it's said. If people like calling other people 'hun', 'miss' etc (and some good friends of mine do), tis all good.
Woo! There's a bra-burning tomorrow at 6 too- don't forget!
Except ma'am's off limits too since it makes me feel old. Why not just ask me my name and use it, especially if we work together?
And if my husband were not sick and in bed, he'd be quite willing to make dinner if I asked him. He'd pick up the children from school. He'd have no problems with me fighting his battles. And knows that out of anyone, I could make the soccer moms cry if I ever let off steam about how their lives are meaningless, but then again, raising the futures of this world has always been a priority to me: as a female, a college student, counselor, teacher and now mother and as one, who gladly labels herself a modern feminist.
Ugh, this is ridiculous. Feminists might believe some of these things, but it varies strongly from person to person. Like, I would never take my husband's name. I have no problem with anyone who does, but I won't. A) Because I'm not a big fan of my fiance's last name, and B) because I have had my name for my entire life, I love it, and I don't want my marriage to symbolize me becoming another person. My last name is extremely uncommon, too. If it were something like "Jones" or "Smith", I'd probably change it. So that's a feminist thing, apparently. However, I do think there are some differences between males and females that aren't biologically based--they're culturally based, and they do vary widely, but a male raised in the USA is going to be different from a female raised in the same area by the same kinds of parents. So that's...not feminist
( ... )
Evidently not. Just as believing in evolution means that you automatically cannot be a Christian, apparently. *is surprised at her new lack of religion*
there's no point in making generalizations like this
Those aren't generalisations in that list- they're stereotypes, and absolutely ridiculous ones at that.
And word on bras. They were invented by a woman, for women to be comfortable. I seriously don't get the bra-burners- they should be a symbol of liberation, not the other way around!
Oh bullshit. Femminists do NOT all reject traditional arts. I love baking, it's great fun and produces tasty things! Doesn't mean I'm not a feminist.
And regarding the Henry VIII one, WHAT? Seriously, it's ALWAYS been that way - the most interesting thing about the old creep was that he married six different women. A femminist viewing might be more interested in the women themselves rather than their relation to Henry (and they were all pretty damn awesome in their own ways)
"Ma'am" is respectful - I'd approve of that. I dislike plenty of other terms for women but "ma'am" would make me smile!
*sighs* I hate lists like that. SOME femminists might believe one or more of those things. SOME feminists might believe all of those things. That doesn't mean we're all the same. WE'RE ALL DIFFERENT DAMMIT. *grinds teeth*
I've met a lot of people who object to being addressed as "ma'am", but as far as I can tell none of them objected on OMGMILITANTFEMINIST grounds -- I've also met a lot of guys who were uncomfortable being called "sir". It often implies a sense of seniority in terms of status and/or physical age that people don't think (or want to think hahaha) they have. So it's more "oh, you don't have to call me 'ma'am'" than "YOU DARE TO INVOKE THE PATRIARCHAL WORD 'MADAM' IN MY PRESENCE?"
That said, I have to admit that feminism kind of bores me, in an "of course women are equal to men, why are we still talking about this?" way. That, and I've met a lot of self-proclaimed feminists who are female-supremacist, and I want to beat them with a hammer like in Super Smash Bros Brawl because ughhhh hypocrisy. -_-
