Part six

David sat in the passenger seat as Michael drove to the mall. They were silence for most of the way, Michael concentrated on the traffic while David stared out of his rolled down window. David’s cell phone ringing broke the silence. He picked it up.
“Hello.” He answered. Michael stopped at a red light and looked over to see David cringe.
“Hey Kim.” David paused listening to Kimberly talk, “No I- no go ahead.” He rubbed his temple, feeling a headache start to develop. “Uh, I don’t think we should tonight.” He looked over to Michael with a panicked look on his face. Michael just shook his head. “No I didn’t mean that, I meant-no Kim that’s not-” He paused, “No that wasn’t what I meant-” He was cut off again, “Its not that I had a bad time-” He was cut off yet again, “No Kim….Kim….Kim…. I really don’t think we should go out again…..no I mean, ever.” He winced and held his phone away from his ear, Michael could hear her yelling. “No! Kim!-” David began, “Kim! Kim! That’s not why- Kim! Calm down- “
David remained silent for a moment, “Kim it wasn’t because of that. It’s just; I’m not ready to have a girlfriend right now,” He paused again, “No! I didn’t want you only for that.” He rolled his eyes at Michael.
“No Kim, Kim, Kim it’s not…it’s -Kim! Would you let me just-Kim! Kim!-Because I don’t like you!” He yelled, he snapped shut his phone and threw it out the window as the light turned green, “God!” He sat back in his seat.
“So she took that, not well I’m guessing.” Michael stated as he pulled into the mall parking lot.
“That would be an understatement.” David’s eyes just went wide and he whipped his head around, he turned back around with a pained look on his face, “Why did I throw my phone out the window?”
Michael laughed, he looked over to David, who was not amused and quieted himself, “I’m sorry.”
“Well, I guess we’re stopping at Best Buy too.”
“I guess so.” Michael said stiffening a laugh.
“It’s not funny.”
“Maybe not now but trust me it will be.”

They left Picture People, David’s mood was slowly improving but he was still mad at himself for throwing his phone out the window. Michael froze in his steps. David looked over at him.
“What?”
Michael looked back at him with a smile, “They fixed the escalator.”
David looked over and saw that the yellow barriers were gone and several people were riding on it.
David felt himself blush as he remembered the kiss he and Michael shared on it last week. He knew that to Michael it was just a way to distract Carly and her sidekicks but sometimes he can still feel a tingle on his lips. They never talked about it; there was no reason to really. It meant nothing to Michael, but David tried not to let it mean anything to him.
“Want to go up it?” Michael asked with a small laugh.
David tried not to laugh, “Uh,” He muttered as he scratched the back of his head. He tried to fight the smile that was spreading across his lips, making Michael laugh. “Yeah, sure. As long as you promise not to get fresh with me.”
“I promise to be nothing less of a gentleman.” Michael smiled as he walked towards the now fixed escalator. David swallowed and tried to get his legs to work. Michael looked behind him when he reached the foot of the moving stairs.
“Well c’mon!” He smiled as he waved him over.
David nodded and slowly walked over to join him. He took a deep breath when he stood next to Michael. He looked down and stepped on to the escalator. He kept his eyes glued in front of him, he tried not to smell Michael’s cologne but he was standing too close to him. His eyes slipped shut as Michael’s scent invaded his scenes, making his head spin. His eyes flew open when he felt something brush against his hand. He scratched at it, passing it off as nothing. He looked over the side of the escalator, trying to find something to look at besides Michael. He felt something tickle his hand again; he jerked his hand away from the tickle and scratched it again. He looked over to Michael who was looking forward, he sighed and looked ahead again, they were almost at the top.
Suddenly, he and Michael were jerked forward. Michael and David clung to the now not moving railing. They looked to each other and to the other shoppers on the escalator with them. Several people groaned and huffed. The escalators had broken again. Michael straightened himself up.
“Huh,” he said as he looked over to David, “Weird.”
“Yeah.” David nodded.
“So, what exactly did you want to talk to me about?” Michael said flat out.
David froze, a cold sweat started to trickle down his forehead, his mouth went dry, and he knew if he tried to talk, his voice would crack. His eyes went wide and he looked over to Michael. Michael had no hint of a smile, and that scared him. He could feel his heart in his throat, and he heard it in his ears. He swallowed.
“Umm,” He said quietly, “I don’t think this is the right-”
“No, it is.” Michael said sternly.
He shifted his eyes, “Mike, really this isn’t-”He felt ready to cry.
“Don’t play dumb with me.”
David’s head snapped to Michael, his breathing became heavier, “What?” He squeaked out.
“David, I know what you want to tell me.”
‘Oh God.’ David thought, his heart sped up even faster if that was possible, he felt light headed, his knees gave out and he leaned against the railing. Michael knew, and he didn’t look happy. David slowly shook his head, “I’m sorry Mike.” He winced, fully prepared for a huge fist to suddenly meet his face.
“You’re sorry.” Mike said in an almost laugh, “Your sorry?” He asked more sternly.
“Mike please!” David said, his voice cracking, “I never planned on this happening. It just, I don’t know, happened.”
“It just happened?” Michael shouted, “It just happened? You’re my best friend! We have been friends for how many years? You do this to me and you just say it happened? How could you keep this from me?”
David quickly looked around and saw that many people on the lower level were staring at them.
“Mike, please,” He began, his voice cracking, “you’re causing a scene!”
“Your damn right I’m causing a scene! I have every right to!” He yelled leaning towards him, David quickly backed up the steps, away from Michael.
“Michael please, I know you’re pissed but this is really something we need to talk about in private.”
“Oh in private! Yeah let’s talk about it in private!” Michael yelled as he followed David up the broken stairs, “Lets talk about it in private, so you can just tell me it was, ‘all an accident’, or ‘I just had a few too many and it just happened, buddy! I’m sorry!’”
“Michael you’re not making sense! Calm down!” David cried as Michael closed the space between them. Michael had him backed up against a trashcan.
“Oh I’m not making sense! You’re the one who called it all an accident!”
“Mike-”
“What, so your dick just fell into her mouth, huh?”
“Michael listen to me-……wait what?” David asked, his mind was going 100 miles per hour but suddenly he hit the brakes, what the hell was Michael talking about?
“You sang that song to her.” Michael growled through gritted teeth, “You gave her that look. That look you gave Kim today. It was the same song, and the same Goddamn look!
“Michael I seriously-” A tear fell down his cheek.
“You could get any girl! Any fucking girl in the world. But you picked her! Out of all of them!”
“What? Kim? You set me up with her!”
“Don’t play fucking stupid with me!” Michael growled as he grabbed the front of David’s shirt. “Tell me you didn’t do it!”
“What?”
Michael shook him, “Tell me you didn’t sleep with my wife!”
David went cold, he felt himself go limp, “Oh my God! Mike-”
Michael let go of him and shook his head, “I fucking loved you! I loved you! Then you go and do this? How? Why? Why would you do that?” Michael yelled, his eyes welling with tears.
“Michael, you need to calm down. I didn’t sleep with your wife!” David said sternly.
“You gave that look you gave Kim to my wife last year, on her birthday when you sang that exact same song to her. I’m not fucking simple.”
“Michael that is not what I was going to tell you!” He cried.
“Then what? What were you going to tell me?” Michael growled as he cornered David against the trashcan. “What? What were you going to tell me? That you’re in love with her? That you’re sorry? What? What are you going to tell me that was so fucking unimportant that you could just wait for an appropriate moment? What? What was it?” David took a deep breath, feeling anger start to rise through his system, “Tell me right now!” Michael yelled right in David’s ear. David had enough; he furrowed his brow and shoved Michael off him.
“I WAS GOING TO TELL YOU THAT I LOVE YOU, YOU ASS-HOLE.” David screamed he knew people were staring but he didn’t care. He brushed a tear off his cheek; he looked at Michael, whose face was frozen. David just took a deep breath and picked up the Picture People bag that Michael had dropped and headed towards the parking lot. Michael just stood there, feeling God smacked. He shook himself out of his trance.
“David!” He called after him, “David wait!”
“Just forget it!” David spat back as he made his way down the mall.
******************************************************************************************
David leaned against the car, tears rolling down his face; he had so many thoughts running through his head. He just told Michael he loved him right after Michael accused him of sleeping with his wife in the middle of the mall, with all those people looking at them. Sure, he was gay or bi, but he didn’t want the whole tri-county area to know. His face was bright red; he was embarrassed, angry, depressed. The man he was best friend with and in love with just tried to punch him out. He shook his head and sighed. He knew what came next, Michael won’t talk to him, he’ll leave and go back to his ex-wife, and they’ll never talk again. Simple as that. He rubbed his face.
He just wanted to go home; Brooke was always there to lean on. He’ll have to nurse a broken heart for a while when Michael starts packing but, that’s why God invented Scotch. He bit his lower lip and looked down at his feet. It shouldn’t have happened like this, he wanted to sit him down and dance around the issue for a while as they watched a movie. Lightly hit on the subject of homosexuality and then let the bomb drop when Michael was half a sleep. Michael in the morning would get him alone in the kitchen as they made themselves breakfast, Brooke would be out running errands, and Archie would be at school. He would ask if he heard him right, he would awkwardly say yes, and Michael would just smile and tell him it didn’t matter who he liked to bang, he ‘d always be his friend. He’d wait a while till he told him he really cared for him, and-
David looked up, and saw Michael standing at the end of the car. He had a frown on his face, he looked sorry. David just turned his head and looked at the SUV right in front of him, and glared at Michael’s reflection in the well-waxed door.
“David I don’t know what to -”
“Just open the car and take me home.”
David saw Michael’s reflection move around the car, he squeezed his eyes shut hard, willing himself to stop crying.
“David-”
David opened his eyes and just looked at Michael’s reflection. “What?”
Michael slowly put a hand on his shoulder. David rolled his shoulder and inched away from him.
“David, please.” Michael said softly. “Are you, I mean, what you said back there, does that mean-”
“What? That I’m not banging your ex-wife? If that’s what your trying to ask then, no I‘m not!”
“David, I’m sorry about-,” He paused and looked back to the mall and quickly back to David, “Well, that’s all I could think of Dave! I mean you never keep anything from me, so it had to be big.”
“Whatever.” David said shaking his head. “Just unlock the door.”
“Waite I just, we need to clear this up right now.” Michael said closing his eyes, he took a deep breath and looked to David. “What you said back there, you’re gay?”
David paused, “Yes.” He said quietly, “I mean, I still love women but I like men just as much.”
“So, your bi?”
“I guess so, Mike.” David sighed.
“Okay, okay I’m cool with that. I am okay with that.” Michael said firmly.
“Oh I am just pleased as punch Mike.” David said sarcastically, “I mean considering you just accused me of sleeping with your wife!”
“I am sorry! I just, I don’t know why I thought that-”
“Yeah considering I wasn’t looking at Kim this morning! I was looking right at you! You jackass.”
“I know, I know.” He took a deep breath, “I just, I really don’t know what I can say to make up for that Dave, seriously. That was low, no it was lower than low for me to accuse you of that.”
“Yeah it was.”
“I know.”
“Uh-huh.”
“You’re my best friend! I mean, it has just been so fucking hard going through this whole divorce, she is being civil and all, but still you know it doesn’t feel great. It just came so out of the blue you know.”
“Yeah it did.” David agreed.
Michael leaned against the car next to David. They just stayed quiet for a while, both of them soaking in each other’s melancholy, until Michael cleared his throat.
“I am sorry.” He said quietly, “And I understand if you can’t forgive me.”
David thought for a moment, “I still…I mean…I don’t know Mike.”
“I understand. I do, really.”
David just nodded, Michael bit his lip. They remained quiet again, all they heard were the large seagulls cawing overhead after they found a bag of french fries on the ground.
“I um, I can’t help but bring up on last little thing.” Michael spoke with a finger tapping against his lip.
David’s eyes went wide, he didn’t want to bring it up, and he just wanted to forget he said anything, forget he felt anything right now.
“When you said, you loved me,” Michael began with a shaky voice. David swallowed; he could barely hear his voice over the sound of his blood rushing through his system, “Did you mean it the way I meant it?”
It took David a moment to open his mouth, and even longer to get his vocal chords to work.
“Probably not.” He managed to say.
Michael looked over to him, “David,” He began slowly, “Do you know how I meant it?”
David’s head whipped around, “What?”
