Ohh the frustration

So...if you have a kid who is perfectly capable of reading and reading well, yet he throws a tantrum every time he has to read, what do you do?? He is not doing well with oral reading strictly due to behavior! I'm trying to positively reinforce him and pair nonpreferred with preferred activities and everything.

Even Eva throws fits when I *make* her read... could you let him choose what he wants to read rather than tell him what to read? Doubt you can do this, but reading IS reading: would he read comic books? You can get some pretty lengthy ones. Get something that piques his interest.

The kid loves bugs and snakes, so I went out and bought a few easy reader books pertaining to those interests...no luck. I tried telling him that he could find out so much more if he read the words instead of guessing from pictures. He told me he didn't need the words because he knew everything from animal planet. I informed him otherwise, and his behaviors said hello. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though. I work in a behavior intervention classroom. Thanks for the tip! I imagine it would work for a "typical" child....maybe someday...
