I think of it more as a turn based system.mortalterrorFebruary 9 2008, 17:20:00 UTC
America swings back and forth, with one side holding the power and then the other. The people get discontented whenever one side is in office for too long, and so we have term limits and quiet revolutions every four years. Democracy, in this country, works best when nobody has all the power, nobody is satisfied, and nobody gets what they want all the time. I think FDR holding on for four terms was a horrible thing. The key is not for a few people to get everything like it would be in an aristocracy, or a plutocracy, but for everyone to get just as much as they really need. For one side to take the House, the Senate, the Executive, and the Judicial branches all at once is a perfect shitstorm to me. Clinton had a republican house and senate, and that worked out great for the country. If there's no compromise and powersharing at the highest levels, then it's better for there to be counter-revolution

I know we don't have as many journalists in jail as those countries. I said that to provoke you into setting the record straight about just how many we really do have in prison. I wanted to hear you say, "We don't have as many in jail, but that doesn't mean things are great. We don't need to be the worst before we clean up our system." You come off a little Uncle Tom on this issue, for my taste and I wanted to hear you denounce a little injustice, that should strike close to home with you. I want to see you throw some fire, not "Oh, well if there are journalists in jail then they must have done something. They don't just lock people up for no reason. This could never happen to me."

Of course it could never happen to you! They only take away the rights of the people on the "fringe" of society, duh. So you have nothing to worry about! Live happy, buy stuff!

Reagan won the Cold War by taking a tough stand on the Soviet Union. Would the Soviet Union collapse under its own weight eventually anyway? Yes, eventually. If we'd had a leader pussy-foot around it, then we might be seeing it collapse now instead of 15 years ago. Or maybe they'd have restructured a little and we'd still be worrying about geothermal nuclear war. Woohoo
