The second book is a definite oddity: described as "A story of England" it attempts to cross the genres of childrens story and history book and for a time was probably quite successful

Are you impugning Miss Streatfeild's ability to accurately write in dialect? Are you implying that she may in fact have rather over egged the (black) pudding while attempting to portray a character of non-southern non-middle class descent?
