Danny's been searching for a bakery or some other kind of place that'll have something to keep his mind off the fact that it's still snowy and he's lost his footing three times today. Out of a sort of self-preservation, he's equipped himself with a metal-studded cane and is leaning hard on it as he keeps walking, seeing a familiar profile not too far away.
"Hey!" he summons, calling out to her. "Is there something I can't see down here? Is this where the kids are hanging out these days?"
"Yeah, all us kids hang out here all the time. Can't you see the big group I'm with?" Kate called back, rolling her eyes, even though she was glad for Danny's sudden appearance. If he was there, it wasn't likely anyone was going to try to slice her open.
"I'm stuck," she admitted, leaning back against the wall again and pointed up to the mistletoe hanging above her. "This shit finally got me and I was doing so well until now."
Danny's been in that same position, but he'd been lucky enough that Zulu had run and fetched Steve before too much time could pass. He wanders closer, leaning both hands on the top of his cane as he peers at her just beneath the brim of his top hat. "You realize what's about to happen is going to be very awkward, right?"
"Oh, my god, just don't talk about it. Like, ever," Kate insisted, closing her eyes in an expression that was almost a wince. It wasn't that Danny wasn't hot -- because he was -- but he was sort of up there with Jeff in the weird kind of fatherly, sort of like family area of her life. Nice guys, good looking guys, but not the guys she wanted to kiss.
Plus, he was getting married and she was with Harry, which added another level of weirdness to the whole thing.
"Let's just do this and get me out of here," she said, her eyes still closed.
Sam had been out exploring the city, enjoying the chance to wear a top hat and cravat and blend in. Well, he blended in with some of the ghosts at least, not many of the actual islanders were going all out with the Victorian dress code. Sam, for his part, decided to live it up and just have fun with it. Especially since he didn't have to wear a corset or a bustle and because his girlfriend did, and she looked amazing in a corset.
For now though, he was going solo and just exploring the place as much as he could. That's when he found Kate, in an alley, talking about balls.
"Mistletoed, ouch," he said, glancing up above her once he got closer. Not even Kate was random enough to just... hang out in an alley.
"Yeah, this pretty much sucks the big one," Kate agreed, looking up at the mistletoe again. "I was doing such a good job of avoiding it, too, and now this. Stuck under the mistletoe and stuck in a freaking alley." She'd just been trying to find a shortcut, a way to get from one street to the other without much hassle.
Instead, she'd gotten this. All the hassle. And the stupid mistletoe right above her head.
"Your girlfriend is a superhero, too, she'll kick my ass if you kiss me," she added, pointing at Sam. "I want my ass to remain unkicked."
"I think she'd be okay if I gave you a kiss on the cheek to let you out," Sam said. Plus, he wasn't just going to leave Kate here in the middle of an alley all by herself. At the very least he'd hang out here long enough for someone Kate didn't mind kissing her to come along.
"Plus, you're cold," he said, shucking off his jacket and handing it to her. "I'm not just going to stand here while you're freezing in an alley, unable to move. Sir Biggleton Sharkfin totally doesn't roll that way. He rolls like... on one of those weird bicycles, only powered by steam. With a train whistle."
Kate had to grin at that, especially as Sam handed her his jacket. It was leaps and bounds from her life in Kansas and half the time she had no idea how she'd made totally awesome friends, but it had happened somehow. And one of them was even willing to kiss her to get her out of this lame situation.
"Think a kiss on the cheek will work?" she asked, putting his jacket over her shoulders. "Someone told me it has to be a real kiss." God, she could only hop that 'real' didn't translate into 'with tongue'.
She's not stalking other-Kate, but she is keeping an eye on her. And all the rest of the blondes. Fine, she cares, sue her. With Druitt wandering around the island free, she's checking up on her girls as often as she can, even if that means spending most of the day cold and damp walking the streets of old London.
When she hears the shout from the alley, Kate's actually looking for Coraline. She recognizes the voice and takes off at a run. "Kate!" She turns into the alley, knife drawn, expecting to see Druitt or at least a pickpocket.
Mistletoe.
Kate throws the knife and takes out the plant. It falls at other-Kate's feet, and the knife clatters to the ground behind her. Second's later, Kate's standing in front of her. "I really hate that plant," she says, and then smirks and kisses Kate.
It all happened so fast that Kate wasn't even sure what was going on at first. There was definitely a flying knife involved and then the mistletoe was on the ground and then she was being kissed, but at least that meant she could move.
"Holy shit, you're insane," she said, but she was laughing as she said it, totally relieved that it was Kate who had found her. "I mean, insane in an awesome way, but you just..." She trailed off and looked at the knife, then looked up where the mistletoe used to be and then back to Kate. "You totally threw that knife at something dangling above my head."
Grinning, Kate bends down and grabs her knife, cleans it off on the skirt she's finally given into because the fabrics of the riding breeches aren't that comfortable and she hasn't finished turning any of the dresses into trousers yet.
"I didn't throw it at your head," Kate points out, as if that explains everything. In her mind, it does. At this range, in these wind conditions, with no one attacking her, and Kate unable to move, there was absolutely no chance she was going to hit Kate in the head. At worst, it might've caught her in the shoulder or something on the way down, and one of the advantages of cold and Victorian dress is a lot of layers to stop a knife.
"Still, awesome and kind of crazy," Kate pointed out in return, because she was right about that. Given her history with the reality of crazy, it was actually pretty high on her list of compliments. She might not have said it much, but her mom was the most amazing person she knew.
She'd also been the kind of person who never would have let Kate forget it if she said something like that.
"Thanks for the rescue," she said, falling a few steps away from the mistletoe. Just in case the magic it had didn't expire once it was on the ground. She didn't want to end up stuck all over again.
It was because of said serial killer that Cassie had started doing a bit of patrolling. It probably wasn't necessary with the growing batch of obsessive compulsive Bats but it made her feel better to catch herself every once in a while.
So when she saw a blond girl alone in an alley, she had to go investigate to make sure she was okay. She was wearing the Steampunk version of her uniform, complete with a long leather coat that flared dramatically as she dropped down from one of the buildings. Once she was on ground, she realized she recognized the girl. "Kate? Are you okay?"
Of course, the person who was coming to her rescue had to be Sam's girlfriend. Of course.
Not that Kate couldn't admit that she was totally cute, but it was a little awkward to officially introduce yourself to a friend's significant other and then ask for a smooch. Awkward or not, that seemed to be what she was going to have to do and Kate turned with a sigh and a smile.
"Hey," she said. "Cassie, right? I'm totally stuck under this friggin' mistletoe."
It was a little awkward but at least they knew of each other. It could have been worse, they could have found out after the fact. And it wasn't like she could leave her there, especially since she was Sam's friend.
And oh was Sam going to hear about this later. Cassie knew he was going to wish he was here.
"Yeah, that's me. And do you want a hand? I mean, I can totally get someone of the more male variety but I'd rather not leave you alone." If Kate hadn't heard, Cassie wasn't so sure she wanted to worry her.
"Yeah, creepy serial killers skulking around and whatever," Kate agreed with a roll of her eyes. At this point, she was sure everyone knew, mostly because she'd been telling practically everyone she saw. It was partly about spreading the gossip, because nothing that interesting ever happened here, but partly about making sure her ass was covered, too.
"Sam's gonna either think this is awesome or have a fit," she said with a laugh, then shrugged. "If you could help me out, that'd be awesome."
Jeff's used to this kind of weather. It doesn't make him like it any more than he would back home, though, weird island change or not. With the sun setting, he was all planning on heading toward his home (and it's the one thing he likes about this month - it actually felt like he was living in an apartment and not a shack) when he noticed Kate standing around, looking annoyed.
"Waiting for someone?" he asked, which seemed like a safe enough assumption as he approached. Having to stand around outside because someone hadn't showed up yet would piss him off, too.
At the sound of his voice, Kate whirled in that direction, both her hands coming up as if to ward him off. "No, Jeff, don't--"
But by the time she got that much out of her mouth, it really didn't matter anymore. He was too close, as far as she could see and if he tried to step back, she was pretty sure he'd find himself as stuck as she was. Which made this situation just a teeny bit more awkward, because even if Harry did stumble upon her for some reason, she was pretty sure he wasn't going to agree to kiss Jeff, too.
"Hey," she said, then pointed up at the mistletoe.
The attempt at the heads up didn't really sink in until he was too close for it to actually matter. He raised a brow in confusion at her, and confusion quickly turned to dread when his eyes followed where she was pointing.
And he'd been so lucky to not get accidentally caught by one of these the last week or so.
"Oh, crap," he breathed out, trying to step away and immediately meeting the resistance that, let's face it, he knew was going to be there. He was scowling before he even looked back at Kate. And despite knowing she had maybe tried to clue him in, he still immediately demanded, "Why didn't you warn me?!"
"Oh, my god, I did warn you," Kate answered and she would have given him a shove if she hadn't known that he wouldn't actually go anywhere. He'd just bounce off whatever invisible barrier there was surrounding them and rebound right back into her.
This was awkward. This was about as awkward as this could get. The only thing she could think of that might be worse would be if Ginny or Ron were stuck with her. Somehow she thought kissing Harry's ex or his best friend would be weirder than having to kiss Jeff.
