Gabrielle liked to think that she was an adaptable person. That she could accept change in the world around her. In fact, she thought that she'd done very well on the island, getting used to all the new things in the compound and the references people made when the talked about the worlds they came from ( Read more... )

Gabrielle looked up from her knees when she heard Luke. "Luke...wait! I wouldn't come any closer if I were you." She wiped her eyes quickly before she could continue, pointing upwards at the mistletoe. As close friends as she liked to believe they were, she didn't know if that extended to kissing.

The fact that he came to sit beside her and was offering to help meant quite a bit to her. Gabrielle gave him a warm smile and uncurled from the ball she'd made of herself so she could sit properly beside him.

"I'd much prefer you from a stranger. Thank you, Luke." She put a hand on his arm in thanks.

Kate's been walking the city, trying to find faster ways from her house to Magnus and Will's and to Declan's. Trying to find easier ways to keep tabs on her people. The cabs help but they're kind of a pain in the ass.

She's walking past the park when she hears the tears. Normally, she'd ignore the fuck out of someone crying in the city. This isn't just any city. The ducked head is blonde. Druitt's on the loose. And...

And that's mistletoe.

Rolling her eyes at herself, Kate slides onto the bench next to her but not so close the mistletoe catches her too. "Hey," she says a little more quietly than she usually would. The girl's upset already. "For a plant, it's kind of a pain in the ass, isn't it?"

Gabrielle didn't even notice someone who wasn't a ghost was nearby until the woman had sat down. She jumped slightly from being startled but the she gave the other a small, watery smile as she mentioned the mistletoe. "It certainly doesn't help things, no."

She ducked her head again to wipe her eyes on her sleeve. "I hope you aren't stuck now too."

"Nope." Kate gets up and turns in a circle, then comes to settle back down to the bench. The girl seems pretty stressed out so Kate thinks maybe showing her it's going to be okay is a good way to start. "But I know how to get unstuck if I do get stuck, and how to unstick you, too."

She's probably heard about the kissing. Who hasn't by now? But Kate doesn't want to make any assumptions.

It was a relief and Gabrielle let out a deep sigh when she saw the woman wasn't stuck as well. "I know how to get unstuck. I was here last year. And I understand if you would rather not." She did and she wouldn't blame the woman if she didn't want too. Plus, perhaps if she played up getting stuck, she could avoid having to talk about why she was really upset. She didn't know if she could with a stranger.

I did not know her very well, but what I did know of Gabrielle was that she seemed to have a good heart, and a gentle one, kind in a way I was not but tried to be. So when I spotted her on a nearby bench as I walked, I was inclined towards anger at whomever or whatever might have been the cause of her clear upset. Even if I had never met those like the Mahrkagir and Jagun, had been born to a different woman than my own traitorous mother, I know I would still have felt strongly about the mishandling of a gentle soul.

"Gabrielle?" I said as I sat down next to her. "Is something amiss?"

Imriel's voice caused Gabrielle to look up from her skirts and she attempted to give him a smile as she wiped her eyes. "Oh...hi. I'm just a little stuck." She glanced up at the mistletoe hanging over their heads, since it was easier to explain then the real reason she was crying. "I hope you aren't stuck now as well."

"Stuck?" I repeated with a puzzled frown, unsure as to what might be keeping either of us bound to the bench on which we were sat, as there were no restraints that I could discern. In response, I attempted to rise, and my frown deepened when I found that I could not.

I forced down a rather strong flare of anger, schooling my expression to neutrality. Being held against my will was not somewhat I could take lightly. "It seems I am," I replied, trying to remain calm, as I did not want Gabrielle to have the impression I was angered with her. "Do you have any idea as to the source of this...dilemma?"

It was alright, Gabrielle completely understood that he wasn't angry at her, especially since it didn't seem like he knew what was going on. "Look up. See that little plant hanging down? That's mistletoe. It's a tradition to kiss while under it and this place doesn't give you the option of saying no." She said simply with a shrug, hoping that explained it.
