Gabrielle liked to think that she was an adaptable person. That she could accept change in the world around her. In fact, she thought that she'd done very well on the island, getting used to all the new things in the compound and the references people made when the talked about the worlds they came from ( Read more... )

I did not know her very well, but what I did know of Gabrielle was that she seemed to have a good heart, and a gentle one, kind in a way I was not but tried to be. So when I spotted her on a nearby bench as I walked, I was inclined towards anger at whomever or whatever might have been the cause of her clear upset. Even if I had never met those like the Mahrkagir and Jagun, had been born to a different woman than my own traitorous mother, I know I would still have felt strongly about the mishandling of a gentle soul.

"Gabrielle?" I said as I sat down next to her. "Is something amiss?"

Imriel's voice caused Gabrielle to look up from her skirts and she attempted to give him a smile as she wiped her eyes. "Oh...hi. I'm just a little stuck." She glanced up at the mistletoe hanging over their heads, since it was easier to explain then the real reason she was crying. "I hope you aren't stuck now as well."

"Stuck?" I repeated with a puzzled frown, unsure as to what might be keeping either of us bound to the bench on which we were sat, as there were no restraints that I could discern. In response, I attempted to rise, and my frown deepened when I found that I could not.

I forced down a rather strong flare of anger, schooling my expression to neutrality. Being held against my will was not somewhat I could take lightly. "It seems I am," I replied, trying to remain calm, as I did not want Gabrielle to have the impression I was angered with her. "Do you have any idea as to the source of this...dilemma?"

It was alright, Gabrielle completely understood that he wasn't angry at her, especially since it didn't seem like he knew what was going on. "Look up. See that little plant hanging down? That's mistletoe. It's a tradition to kiss while under it and this place doesn't give you the option of saying no." She said simply with a shrug, hoping that explained it.

"A kiss?" I looked up at the green sprig Gabrielle had called mistletoe. It seemed a harmless enough trick, and having expected much worse I relaxed, the tension leaving my shoulders as I lowered my gaze to her once again. A few years before I would have been galled at the prospect of kissing another against my will, but I had since learned some measure of perspective. "That's remedied easily enough, then. May I?"
