Nikola was in love... with Victorian London; the sights, the smells, the sounds, the fashion and of course more importantly it was the glorious dawning of a second industrial age led by the scientific genius mind of, you guessed it, Nikola Tesla. And a few others of course but mostly Tesla. Definitely not Edison. And in Victorian London? Nikola ( Read more... )

Did Loki really have any good reason to be where he was? No. Did the god of mischief need one? Of course not. Yet he did have a reason to be there, though whether or not it was ultimately a good one was unknown for the time being. While the island may have stripped Loki of his magic it had not left all avenues to his ends closed to him. He watched the posturing man carefully, a smile cutting across his face. Loki may not have been particularly adept at building and manipulating mechanical contraptions of his own, but manipulating the designer himself could be another matter entirely.

"Can I?" He glanced at the man seemingly for the first time, clearly feigning disinterest. "I haven't seen anything that merits it."

Nikola turned his head not letting the clear disinterest get him down. He was Nikola Tesla, the crowds here adored him and it was doing wonders for his ego.

"Really? Well, when you revolution modern science come and let me know and perhaps I'll take your opinion into more serious consideration." Nikola replied, taking the box of scraps and beginning to construct the start of the coil. He planned to do something later, privately, which was much more advanced but he wanted to sure these idiots what could be achieved with the bare minimals in a era where scientific progress was only just being achieved. "I'm the greatest mind of the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty first century that alone deserves an applause."

"Do you have proof of that?" Loki continued with his questioning of the man, never one to let an overly long, egoistic rebuttal get in his way. With the mighty thunder god Thor for a brother he had become quite adept at manipulating those with grand, self-inflated opinions of themselves. He shrugged. "A statement like that requires proof. Unless you can make that do something truly spectacular," he said, gesturing to the components that the man was to be building his device from.

"Look me up," Nikola replied. "Something truly spectacular? Not out of this drivel, this is for these dunderheads and my students. If you wanted spectacular well... what's it worth to you?"

To humor him, I politely put my hands together in a respectful applause, although I did find myself asking the rather obvious question, "And what, Messire, is a Tesla coil?"

It was likely something clever and mechanical that with my current education I would be mystified at. The desire to catch up was overwhelming, I didn't even know where to begin my new studies. Did I pick up medicine as I apparently once had? Did I choose something new? Perhaps the sciences that so mystified me?

Nikola took a little flourish of a bow, placing his hand on his stomach before looking up at Phedre. Hmmm, not his favourite no Delaunay.

"A resonant transformer circuit capable of producing a higher current," Nikola replied. "The marvel of modern science as it was then and still is. Never wrote half my ideas down, that kept the scientific community guessing for a while after my supposed death."

"I'm... I'm afraid I didn't understand that, even. But it sounds impressive."

Flattery seemed the best bet with Nikola, I'd noticed his tendency to tout his own skills and while I didn't exactly find it seemly, it was hardly the worst trait I'd seen. Perhaps I was just too used to my Joscelin's reserved and humble nature, Alcuin's as well, but Nikola was part of my life now and allowances would be made.

"I was wondering if Alcuin was here, have you seen him?"

"Start with the basics, you'll need a basic grasp of scientific principles. Modern science preferably, then once your basics are sorted then introduce the more advanced stuff. Alcuin could tutor you I'm sure, he's one of my top students." Nikola replied, fingers twitching at the mention of the younger man that Nikola was in... volved with. That was what he was going with. "Saw him earlier, will see him later but no he's not here at the moment."

Despite having been in and out of the lab since his arrival, Jonas didn't really have a project of his own nor was he really helping with anyone. He wanted to, but he kept getting distracted by watching and asking questions about everyone else's projects.

And now that everything had changed, Jonas was even more excited, especially since this technology seemed so much more fanciful then anything he'd seen on Earth or with SG-1. It was so exciting.

Jonas looked up when Tesla came in and cocked his head curiously. "You mean a resonant transformer circuit? That's not all that hard..."

"No, I mean a Tesla coil. If I'd wanted to call it a resonant transformer circuit then that is what I would have called it when I invented it," Nikola replied before looking at the man. Nikola held the box of scraps that would stump even a smart scientist as to what they were for, the bits alone couldn't make a coil without a little... ingenuity. "Really? Think you can make it with this?"

"But..." Jonas snapped his mouth shut as he realized that saying that Tesla hadn't invented it on Jonas' planet wouldn't go over too well. "Nevermind."

To hide his stumble, he looked into the box and shifted things around so he could get a better look at the contents. "Possibly. The only thing I know about electricity is in relation to it's effects on naquada and nequadria."

"Naquada?" Nikola looked up at the word, eyes narrowing at the hint of something new and possibly something he could exploit. "What is naquada? Nequadria being a... byproduct?"

Declan does applaud politely because, well, it's always better to make Tesla think he's brilliant before asking him for a favor. He's not sure how he ended up drawing this straw except, he thinks, Kate's probably more equipped to network around and drum up some caution about John Druitt. Declan keeps to himself, for the most part.

"Pretty brilliant, Tesla. Good show."

Nikola turned, looking at the applause smiling before his smile dropped away. Nikola wasn't stupid when one of the Sanctuary drones was applauding they wanted something.

"What do you want?" Nikola asked crossing his arms as he felt that ever so good cheery mood disappearing away.

"The glory of your presence, mate," Declan says cheerily enough. He's not as against Tesla as Zimmerman is and he doesn't know Kate's opinion but he feels like Tesla annoys her more than anything else.

He'd always been a decent sort when James was around and that's all Declan had really cared about. Tesla's always there when they need him.

"Don't believe me?"

"Oh yes, of course I believe you oh no wait my name isn't Will and I'm not a gullible idiot. Did that sort of talk work with James?" Nikola asked doubting that it did. Even James tended to know when Nikola was up to something even if he never knew specifics. "Let's drop the coy pretending, what do you want?"
