There are moments in Danny's life that he's proud of. There's ones that he's okay with shoving under the carpet, too. The more he thinks about it, the more he thinks that this one right here is gonna be in the latter category ( Read more... )

Rachel's ribs still feel like shit on fire but she can at least walk up to the damn compound, now. She's fresh out of the shower, ribs wrapped back up as she toddles to the rec room, ready to flirt her way into a prime couch spot. Well, maybe not flirt. Not with a pregnant belly and a black eye.

But then......then.

"What the fuck is that," she gasps, as horrible things happen. Horrible, gross things.

"That," Danny says as he coughs once, twice, and then a third time to try and shake loose the block he seems to have in his throat, "is a beautiful moment," he insists. Zulu perks up in order to look at Rachel when he hears her voice, letting out a pitiful whine and rolling onto his back -- paws twitching in the air as he waits to get pet.

Rachel gives the dog a cursory scratch as she leans in a little closer. "You're crying, aren't you? Oh my God. You're crying. At the alien birth."

"Look, are you a mother yet? No. Give it nine months and come back and watch this with me then and you will be sobbing your mascara off," Danny guarantees with an assured nod. "Swear to god, Rachel, this is a good movie. I like this movie," he says with a gesture at the screen. "Can you please not ruin it for me? Please?"

"What the hell..?"

Florence has gotten used to the idea of a great many things since her arrival on the island. Different technology, different political structure, different languages, all of those had come and been accepted into her new world view. But what she saw on the television screen was something else entirely. She didn't even know how to explain it, or the man sitting, and perhaps even crying, over what was happening. So perhaps she could be forgiven for not understanding the significance.

Danny realizes, belatedly, that this does not look good from a stranger's perspective. Actually, it probably looks like something that's bound to get him talked about. "Okay, first of all, I'm not crying." He is. "And if I were crying, it'd only be because of the significance of this movie and how this scene represents sacrifice and friendship and the meaning of birth."

"I don't-" Florence doesn't care if he's crying, not really, she's seen stranger since arriving, but the images in the television... she can't even wrap her head around it except... "It seems so real? How is that even..?"

She's never seen anything like that, in movies or in television, and maybe that's just because she's just so far behind what seems to be the normal for everyone else. But there's a level of emotion and realism in... whatever it is she's seeing that she can't look away.

Danny's brow furrows and he gives her a confused look until things sort of fall into place and Danny realizes what's going on. He gets up and puts the movie on pause, giving the woman a sympathetic look. "I'm gonna go ahead and guess this was your first time seeing one of those things?"

Community service done for the day, Kate takes her freshly showered ass to the clothing box to dig around for more black fabric. Shoes. Trenchcoat. Something 'soft and pretty'. And some stuff that's not so soft. Leather or suede or denim. She's got a pretty good haul at the hut but shopping vintage is like a part-time job.

The box is in a mood today and she ends up with a lot of melodramatic Goth crap, but it's black and there's a wannabe-cute skirt, plus a pair of red heels (score). She crams it all down into a bag and she's about to skate out but there's some cheesy sci fi on the tv and there's a very familiar puppy and... not Steve.

Too bad. Danny can just put up with her today.

She drops her stuff at the foot of the couch and hops over the back. "Hey, Z-man," she croons at the puppy and gives him a belly pat, before shooting a look at Danny. "What're we watching, Five-O?"

Danny stifles away the sniffles and makes sure he's got his best 'stern' face on. It's not that he's really miffed at her, but Kate still represents Steve's temporary break from sanity and the reason why they had a two night cold-war. "This is Enemy Mine. It is beautiful. It's classic," he swears by it, adjusting Zulu when his chin starts to dig too hard into Danny's inner thigh.

Oh, she caught the sniffles and the emo, but Kate's not the type to mock right up front. No, no. She'll save that. Bust it out sometime next month or some other unexpected time.

Instead, she quirks a small grin at him and the dog and scootches down into the couch cushions to get comfy. "Gooey hermaphroditic sci fi. Good call." She flips her hand at the screen. "Funny how that's kinda almost what happened with me and Magnus. Except I didn't deliver her baby. Just a baby Stenophelhabilis. Ralphie."

Danny raises his brow at her, as if inviting explanation as to whether she's mocking his movie. "A baby what now?" he replies, gaping slightly. "Because this is definitely a conversation that is beyond normal-weird." He moves the vows next, one last fleeting glance at them before dismissing them as crap and in need of a rewrite.

Steve doesn't have to look around very far to seek out Danny, especially when he tends to only go to one of several locations these days. Not to mention he's left a note by way of explaining his and the dog's whereabouts, and when Steve enters, he decides to just enjoy the scene in front of him for a moment, rounding around behind the couch and trying to remain as silent as possible.

He vaguely recognizes the movie playing on the screen, but he figures Danny will explain it to him when he sits down, and as he gets closer, he spots Zulu stretched out along his side, sleeping soundly, his paws occasionally twitching. Steve's close enough to reach over and touch Danny if he just takes a few more steps, slowly and evenly.

Danny doesn't even look backwards. He doesn't actually hear a sound, but he knows Steve and he knows the goof and plus, Danny has left a note. "You know," he says distractedly. "That would be so much more impressive if I weren't expecting you about a half hour ago," he notes.

Steve's posture slumps visibly and he looks around, casual and unassuming, as if he hadn't just been prepared to sneak up on Danny only seconds before, and he sits on the arm of the couch, leaning over slightly. "Well, maybe if you'd left the note in a place that was actually, you know, visible."

"Hey, excuse me for the fact that our hut is currently a mess of papers from both your freaking out about the council thing and my freaking out about wedding vows." He reaches over to pick up the mobile notebook of thoughts he's got with him, moving it forcibly over to make room for Steve. "I left it in the pile of papers," he defends his actions. "Perfectly normal place."

"I'm surprised you braved that thing again," Clark remarks when he stops just behind Danny's seat. The last time Clark found him like this, he'd been watching old episodes of Hawaii Five-0, which had gone over about as well as could be expected.

"You're not going to tell me that your best friend's an alien now, are you?" he asks, doing a very poor job of biting back a smile.

"Admittedly, Steve dragged me here to watch something I didn't want to see, but I am not a quitter," Danny says emphatically, dragging Zulu forcibly up into his lap before soothing him with a hand over the nape of his neck. "Hey, buddy, shh," he murmurs. "And I dunno, you're a pretty good friend," he replies with a smirk.

"I guess I do okay," Clark allows with a quiet laugh. Sometimes even now, after everything that happened with Jor-El and Zod and Kara, Clark finds it strange to think of himself as an alien. He certainly wasn't raised as one.

"Interesting choice," he adds with a nod to the screen.

"It is not interesting, it is classic," Danny corrects mildly, not wanting to get into a long argument with Clark about the merits of good sci-fi, especially when this movie is so dear to him in his heart. "C'mon, what are you, busy? Take a load off, sit down," he says, gesturing to the space beside him.
