The last time House had gotten drunk at the Winchester he'd ended up taking home a hot girl with good intentions but a serious lack of follow-through. This time it wasn't because he was expecting similar results, but rather for the simplest reason of all: His leg hurt ( Read more... )

Gwen's actually planning on having lunch at the Winchester, more than anything else, but seeing House standing just outside makes her pause. She's only met him the once but it was pleasant enough, as such things went. It's not in her nature not to stop and ask about him and, if he needs something to go fetch it for him.

"Are you all right? Need...anything?"

"And here I thought I had problems because there's an alien and an Aussie raising my biological child and I'm fucking numb about it," Gwen says, figuring that misery loves company.

"Sorry. Not sure how Jack's staying faithful now, though. I've always figured he's got too much love to give."

"I know, right!" House threw up his hands, which resulted in a stumble. "And having a kid now, what the fuck. What the fucking fuck."

They had reached his steps. "Come on in," he said. "I'll tell you stories."

"Got anything to drink stowed away in here?" Gwen asks, stepping inside. Bloody stupid, probably, but she's got nothing to lose. It's not like Rhys is showing up (she's looked every day to make sure) and things aren't changing.

"Nope," said House. "If I did, I wouldn't have been at the bar. That requires walking, and as you can see, walking is not my strong suit." He closed the door behind them and leaned his cane against the dresser so he could take off his jacket. The place was neat except for the unmade bed. Kind of spartan. Guitar in a case in the corner. Some books stacked in various places, so the lesbian erotica wasn't even laying out.

"I do have pot if you want some."

"Haven't done that since I was a teenager," Gwen admits but she still nods acceptance anyway. It's legal on the island and it'll make her blank and that's about all she can ask for when her head's still reeling from finding out about Nate.

"Besides, smoking out with a PC means you can't get arrested, yeah?"

"I don't know," said House. "I would expect more experience with marijuana from the Macs." He opened a drawer and pulled out a box with his stash - the good stuff Logan had given him, some joints already rolled.

He limped over without the help of his cane and sank onto the bed since it was really the only seating surface, and held up a joint and some matches.

Gwen takes a joint and lights it, inhaling deeply and letting it hit before she speaks again. Suddenly, things start to look up. Granted, she's not exactly handling things in a healthy way but when has she ever mastered her emotions instead of letting them master her?

"How long were you together, then? You and Jack?"

"Over a year," said House, and he wasn't sure how long over. Was it closer to two? Ten? Hard to say, wow, he was drunker than he thought.

"That's a long time, for Jack," Gwen says, wondering how long it's been now for his husband. It's pessimistic, perhaps, to expect Jack to cheat but was it really cheating with Jack? If anyone ever loved too much, it was Jack Harkness.

"I slept with someone shortly after I got here. He decided he'd rather buzz around a pregnant woman instead. Add insult to injury she's my next door neighbor now. I can't even avoid him properly."

"Oh god please tell me it's the chick who's pregnant with Jack or Logan or whoever's baby," House said. "That would be too good."

"I think it's someone from home that got her pregnant," Gwen says, not knowing who fathered Martha's son. "But the latter would have just been too perfect, I think."

She pauses. "Then there's Rob, who's beating himself up for not telling me he was raising the child I've got no memories of. This place just looks to screw you at every point, yeah?"

"Yeah, that sounds like him," House said dryly. He was amazed he'd held out as long as he did without making his confession. "He's very Catholic."

"The Doctor ended up telling me. I'm so fucking tired of everyone walking around on eggshells around me. I'm sure my former version didn't go get high with a man she barely knew so at least this isn't me making the same old mistakes."

Gwen looks over at House, assessing him carefully. "You know Rob well, then? He's been here as long as you."

"I've known him longer than that," said House. "He worked for me back in Princeton." He hadn't asked her for the joint; he was drunk enough that being high on top of that didn't seem appealing.

Gwen finishes the joint and half smiles. "Didn't know that. I bet he'd be annoyed I was here then, wouldn't he? I guess it depends on your history, more than anything. Are you close? You and Rob?"

Gwen stretches out on the bed, buzzing from the marijuana and finally feeling blank for the first time since she'd found out about Nate. It's nice.
