The island had settled back into its version of normal, but Cissie still felt anxious and out of sorts. The Great Halloween Plushy Massacre featured in her nightmares on a fairly regular basis and she was still picking bits of fluff out of her clothes. It all worked out in the end - she, Bart, Kon and Steph made a pretty good team if she said so ( Read more... )

"Hey!" Stephanie raised her hand in a wave. A free afternoon, which is all well and good, but she'd found herself alone at the beach hungry for company, so she'd pulled a sundress over her swim suit and headed inland. What better place to look for Cissie than at the archery fields?

"It's just me. Don't stop on my accord."

"I have to go get my arrows back from the target anyway so you've got great timing," Cissie said as she headed over, dangling her quiver. "How are you doing?"

"I'm okay." She shrugs and pulls idly at the strap of her sundress slipping down her shoulder. Already, she's tanner than she's ever been, including her time in Africa, and her hair's bleaching out in the sun.

It's not a bad life. Today, though, she's restless.

"It's my day off from classes and things, which means I should be relaxing. Feel sort of useless instead though." Steph smiles at Cissie. "You're at least using your time productively."

"I don't know, does it count as productive if there's not exactly a whole lot I can do with this? Besides stopping the occasional toy turning into monster hordes, that is." Cissie shook her head wryly and started to pluck her arrows out of the target.

"I don't know, I kind of feel restless today. Too much on my mind, I guess, and coming down here usually helps."

Bart had always loved the ease with which Cissie could just lose herself in archery. It was just like how he felt when he was running. So he'd been watching her, waiting to see how long she'd take to notice. It wasn't stalking, because he wouldn't risk startling anyone with a ready weapon in their hands. Cissie still had problems with even considering aiming towards another person. He wouldn't push that.

But when she turned and smiled, he couldn't help crossing the last bit of distance to pull her into a hug. "Hey, beautiful."

Cissie carefully set her bow down and happily wrapped her arms around Bart, leaning her head against his shoulder. She had needed a bit of time to herself, yeah, but she had been thinking about finding someone and she couldn't have picked a better person than him.

"How long have you been there?"

"Not too long," Bart said, still smiling. "I didn't want to interrupt."

"You never interrupt," Cissie reassured him with a kiss to the cheek. "I mean, I'm glad you didn't say 'hi' while I was aiming or anything, but I never mind having you around."

"Hey yourself," Sonya called out, not really all that embarressed about being heard approaching: she was far from agile at this point. "Don't mind me, I'm just feeling nostalgic."

She hadn't used a long bow in months, not since the babies became too prominant for her to properly draw a bow, but that didn't mean she couldn't watch others have fun.

"It's been awhile, hasn't it?" Cissie asked sympathetically. It hadn't really occurred to her that being pregnant would be enough to keep someone from the range but she hadn't really took into account the - well, size issue.

"How much longer now? I know you told me but I can't remember."

Sonya mentally counted.

"Nearly six months." Not that she was that big during the first trimester, but during that time she was either too sick or fatigued to draw a bow straight let allow have decent aim. "Which means I've little over three months to go-provided things go as planned."

Which, in all seriousness, was never the case-in life or with babies.

Cissie shook her head in amazement. It seemed like the time had gone by so quickly but maybe that was just on her end. She could only begin to imagine how time had passed for Sonya. "Well, anytime you need a babysitter or even just some help, I'd be glad to lend a hand or whatever you need."

"Do you think you'll teach them to shoot when they get old enough - if they want to, I mean?"

While Zelda's sport of choice wasn't archery, she was passable at it, and knew enough to know that Cissie was incredibly talented. It was nice just to watch her for a few moments before making her presence known by clearing her throat and giving the other girl a small smile.

"Hello, Cissie. It has been a while since I've seen you," Zelda said, thinking back on the day when Cissie first arrived. She had been the first person Zelda had ever explained the island to, after all, and she felt a bit of a kinship.

"Are you well?"

"I'm doing okay, I guess," Cissie answered as she set her bow down so she could go over and have a proper conversation with Zelda. She was the first person that wasn't from home that she had met here and meeting her had helped to make all of it more real.

"Did you run into any trouble over Halloween? I kind of had a little... adventure with the toys I won."

"Nothing I couldn't handle," Zelda promised, laughing a bit. "It was a bit frightening for a while there, though, and luckily Alistair and I are both trained in swordplay. I could have used a bow, though, and picked them off from afar. That would have been a much better use of my time and skill, I think."

Cissie nodded, wrapping her arms around herself. "Yeah, it was pretty scary. I had my bow out with me and it did help clear out of some of them, but it wasn't much use close up. A crossbow probably would have been better but you have to do what you can with what you have, you know?"

"Hi, you're really good." Coraline said, brushing a strand of blue hair behind her ear as she watched the girl (one of Cassie's and Kon's friends) hit the bullseye. "My friend was really good at this, she tried to teach me but well... I'm much better with swords even if that does make Kon go all frowny at me."

"Thanks," Cissie said, her smile brightening at the compliment. It was probably silly but hearing it did kind of help her feel a little better.

"Coraline, right? Let me guess, Kon gets all worried and overprotective at the thought of you and swords?"

"And guns and boys and short skirts. He really doesn't like the idea of that one, he comes and looms over me and gets grouchy and tells me to change. Dick never did that," Coraline said, though true when Dick had been here Coraline was more into exploring and handstands and dungarees rather than kissing and boys and short skirts. "Yep, I'm Coraline. Coraline Carter. Explorer and adventurer."

"It's Kon, what can I say?" Cissie shook her head. "I love him like a brother and all but he is so overprotective of anyone he considers his girls." And really, that category was pretty much every pretty female teenager but that was besides the point.

"It's nice to meet you. I'm Cissie King-Jones."
