The island had settled back into its version of normal, but Cissie still felt anxious and out of sorts. The Great Halloween Plushy Massacre featured in her nightmares on a fairly regular basis and she was still picking bits of fluff out of her clothes. It all worked out in the end - she, Bart, Kon and Steph made a pretty good team if she said so ( Read more... )

While Zelda's sport of choice wasn't archery, she was passable at it, and knew enough to know that Cissie was incredibly talented. It was nice just to watch her for a few moments before making her presence known by clearing her throat and giving the other girl a small smile.

"Hello, Cissie. It has been a while since I've seen you," Zelda said, thinking back on the day when Cissie first arrived. She had been the first person Zelda had ever explained the island to, after all, and she felt a bit of a kinship.

"Are you well?"

"I'm doing okay, I guess," Cissie answered as she set her bow down so she could go over and have a proper conversation with Zelda. She was the first person that wasn't from home that she had met here and meeting her had helped to make all of it more real.

"Did you run into any trouble over Halloween? I kind of had a little... adventure with the toys I won."

"Nothing I couldn't handle," Zelda promised, laughing a bit. "It was a bit frightening for a while there, though, and luckily Alistair and I are both trained in swordplay. I could have used a bow, though, and picked them off from afar. That would have been a much better use of my time and skill, I think."

Cissie nodded, wrapping her arms around herself. "Yeah, it was pretty scary. I had my bow out with me and it did help clear out of some of them, but it wasn't much use close up. A crossbow probably would have been better but you have to do what you can with what you have, you know?"

"At least you had that. I had to fight hand to hand," Zelda said, shivering slightly with the memory. "It was...unpleasant. Have you been well other than Halloween, though? The island's whims are always trying on a person."

Cissie made a face at the mention of the hand-to-hand fighting. Her plushies had knives and if that was anything like what Zelda had to face with hers, she didn't envy her one bit.

"Other than that, I'm okay, I guess. Sort of kicking myself for going overboard at the carnival and winning all of those toys but I guess there's nothing really to be done for it now, you know?"

"No, and at the time I'm certain we all thought it was nothing but fun," Zelda said, shaking her head with the memory. "Alistair and I certainly had a lot of fun that night and I am trying to keep hold of that memory instead of the later ones. Who did you go with, Cissie?"

"Bart," Cissie answered, knowing she was smiling the smile of the incredibly smitten and not even caring. It was a little embarrassing to get all giggly and blushing but it was totally worth it since it meant she had the best boyfriend ever. "Even if it turned out horribly, we did have a great time abusing the games to get the high scores and prizes and everything."

"That's sweet," Zelda said, unable to keep from blushing and grinning a little herself. She was that way about Alistair sometimes and it was nice to see that at least one other couple on the island could be just as silly.

"I had so much fun trying all the food. We never have things like that in Hyrule."

"Wow, really? Not even like fairs or anything like that? Or did you mean the food?" Either way, that was a bit of a shame, Cissie thought, but at least Zelda had the chance to experience the good stuff here - even if, you know, it followed up the amazing things with something awful.

"The food. We did have traveling carnivals," Zelda said, thinking back on those days. "I always liked to see the jugglers and the acrobats. They are very, very popular in Hyrule. So are mask-sellers and all the children collect the most popular masks."

The mask collecting bit was interesting even though Cissie kept getting a mental image of people collecting different superhero masks even though she was sure that wasn't what Zelda meant at all. "What kind of masks?"

"Popular story characters and things of legend. I had one of a bunny that I particularly loved," Zelda said, remembering. "My childhood friend, Link? He had one that could help him divine the truth. They're not always toys."

"That's really kind of cool," Cissie said. A bunny mask sounded absolutely adorable and a mask that helped you find the truth - well, that was all kinds of awesome - and useful too. "Much more exciting than masks in my world."

"What sorts do you have, then?"

It didn't seem to be a common hobby on the island, mask collecting, and it was sort of strange not to see the little children scrambling over the latest Zora mask.

"They're mostly just sort of blank material that can cover your face. I mean, there's things like cats and birds and stuff for Halloween and little kids, but mostly when I think of masks, I think of the kind that superheroes were," Cissie answered. "They really don't do anything special. Well, I guess Dr. Fate's does, but then it's a helmet, not really a mask so I guess that doesn't count."
