an education, of sorts

Sep 11, 2011 16:24

Given certain questions she'd been asked by Sam and the fact that the island was simply crawling with teenagers at any given point, Helen thought it might be prudent to offer a sex education class just to ensure that if sexual activity was going on (and she was certain it was - she'd raised two teenagers of her own, at one point) everyone had ( Read more... )

Elwood quite likes the rec room. It's cozy and there is plenty to do -- read, converse, and (his favorite) people-watch.

He isn't sure why there are more people than usual gathering inside at the moment, but he would like to find out. Curiosity spurring him onward, Elwood cradles his hand around the glass of whiskey he's been nursing since leaving one of the fine island drinking holes (The Hub, he recalls, and vows to add that to his address book when he has a spare moment) and enters.

Unobtrusively, he slips in the back and sits down in a chair, smiling politely at anyone who might glance his way.

Zelda came to the sex education class more for observation than anything else. She knew about the basics of sex from the partners she'd had and she and Alistair hadn't had any trouble figuring things out as far as condoms went.

Still, it was good for her psychology studies to come to things like this and she settled near someone who appeared to be drinking before smiling politely.

"May I sit here? I wanted to observe."

Elwood never declines company, especially so when it is as lovely as the young lady before him.

"Please," he insists, and rises to adjust the chair nearest him for her. "Do join me. I'm here to observe myself and it will be much more enjoyable with a companion."

"Do you study the mind, then? Dr. Zimmerman is one of my psychology teachers," Zelda explained, settling gratefully in the chair offered to her. "I know about sexual relations, of course, but I thought it would be interesting to observe the class as a part of my own studies."

Kate's not drunk, but she almost wishes she were. Or at least that she had Declan or Aidan or even Tesla to snark with at Will and Magnus making cow eyes at each other while they talk about sex, baby.

But it's Magnus, she works for Magnus, Will's Will, and Kate's leaning against the side wall of the rec room, arms crossed over her chest and watching for anyone making trouble. She may not be much use on this island, but this she can do. Glowering is easily within her wheelhouse.

Helen actually appreciated Kate's presence even if it wasn't their usual scene and after calling for a short break, she made her way over to the other woman to thank her for attending.

"You didn't have to come, you know, but it's certainly appreciated."

Kate grins sharply. It's still weird, and it's going to be weird for a long time, but sometimes it's less weird than others. It looks like today might turn out to be one of the good days.

"What and miss watching you navigate the stormy seas of teen sexuality? Are you kidding? Wouldn't miss it for the world."

Helen laughed, a startled little sound that almost seemed like a snort. Stormy seas of teen sexuality indeed. More like clouds of hormones, but she imagined Kate had noticed that too.

"Right, yes. I always like to do my civil duty. I just don't often get such a lively audience to perform for."

Edward was walking by the rec room with Ein when the dog suddenly jumped up and grabbed the bag she had slung over her shoulder, tugging her into the room where all the people were gathered. It all looked very serious, and Edward wasn't in the mood for serious, but Ein seemed insistent, tugging and wagging his tail until they reached a chair close enough to listen to. Edward didn't really understand what was going on, so she pulled a book out and started to read. Mind processing the conversation happening, but not really paying attention.

The Artful Dodger was not of the insular sort. He strolled around the island, he roamed into all available buildings until occasionally shooed away, he kept his eyes open, and he eavesdropped shamelessly. He couldn't read, of course, so notices on the bulletin board or elsewhere were useless to him, but he had his far more casual information-gathering methods ( ... )

"Gettin' an earful, kid?" Dodge said as he slid into a seat next to Jack. He'd listened from the back of the room for a while but had decided to sit down and see what the fuck was going on. He knew all about sex, but what he knew about reproduction...well, dick goes in, baby comes out. That's all he really needed to know.

Dodger flashed a smile at Dodge when he sat down, glad of someone to share his bemusement with. "Cor, 'ow'd they make somethin' so simple into somethin' so com-plex soundin'? It's practic'ly French!"

"That's science," Dodge replied, sounding confident about his knowledge of modern science. He looked smug, too...even though some of it was a little beyond him, too.

"You understand it all, right? You're going to need to know this shit. It's, uh, important."

Coraline had, had about six maybe seven 'talks' by now. And each one had probably been less informative than the one before. Coraline had liked her talk with Kate, she'd made it easy to understand but everyone else just sort of assumed she knew things when she really, really didn't.

Taking notes, Coraline paid close attention to what everyone was talking about. And of course writing down a million questions.

"'Ullo, Core." Dodger said amiably, dropping into the seat beside her and fiddling with the brim of his hat in his hands. "This is a right laugh, ain't it?"

"Not really, it's very um." Coraline said, wishing Johnny was here to keep her um, company. Looking at Doger, Coraline immediately began to pat her pockets down before looking at him with a smile. "Did they tell you about the balloons that aren't the ballons yet? No one told me about that one for ages. I kept getting weird looks."

Dodger grinned when he saw her check her pockets. It was a wise move, but he was blameless - so far, anyway. "I blew one up, I did." He suddenly wasn't quite sure just what to say - speaking about this sort of thing had always been fine with Bet and Nancy, who had always had a laugh about it with Fagin's boys, but Coraline was a lady, not a Judy. "I ain't off-end-in' your sensibil'ties, are I?" He asked, brow furrowing slightly in concern.
