Running along the beach on the island wasn't like it was back home. Growing up in a city, Sam still wasn't used to the lack of lights on the island. There were always lights and sounds in a city and while the island wasn't as deserted or silent as you might initially expect, it wasn't a city. By the time the sun went down, it could get dark, ( Read more... )

"Even if I could carry you back, I wouldn't do it now that you're all wet and sweaty," Kate answered, appearing from further down the beach with a towel and a book, a long t-shirt worn over her bathing suit. It was too dark to read now, but she tucked the book under her arm anyway, not wanting to explain to anyone why she was reading a book on law enforcement. It was probably a stupid idea anyway.

"Are you practicing to outrun the boar next time?" she asked, grinning.

"So we're pretty much neighbours now," Kate said, grinning, pushing her hair back and squeezing the water out of it. "You better not keep me up with your wild orgies and shit like that, because I totally have an in with the island police and they won't stand for it," she teased, giving Sam a smirk.

"Yeeeeeaahhhh, probably don't have to worry about that," Sam said. He probably should have made some sort of joke about it, but the subject was too on his mind lately.

"We, uh, we keep our orgies pretty quiet."

"Where's the fun in a quiet orgy?" Kate asked, although she sort of got the feeling she wasn't supposed to be making jokes about shit like that at the moment. "Hey, I got arrested after the rave," she said, hoping maybe a subject change would help.

"I had to spend the night in the holding cell and everything," she said. "It was balls."

Sam was about to make a joke about how ball gags were so hot right now when she mentioned that she got arrested.

"Seriously?" he said. Sam had never heard about anyone getting arrested on the island before. "What did you do to get arrested on the island?"

"Well, I got totally fucked up, as you know, because I'm pretty sure I saw you there. There was talk of a double date," Kate said, thinking back to everything that had happened that night. "So later, after like, a whole bunch of other shit, I decided to get up out of bed and try to burn the bookshelf down."

She lifted one shoulder in a shrug and said, "This guy I know stopped me and then this cop came along and was all, 'Blah, blah, consequences' and I had to go spend the night in the holding cell."

"You seriously tried to burn down the bookshelf?" Sam asked.

He knew that some people had issues with it, were hurt by some of the things it produced, but it was one of the few sources of entertainment available on the island. It was one of the places that Sam got a lot of the books he was using to study to become a doctor.

"Yeah," Kate answered, lifting her shoulders in another shrug. There really wasn't much of an excuse for it. "I know it was totally stupid and I never would've managed it anyway, but that isn't even the point. It was fucking dumb." And she had done a lot of dumb things in her life, things she wouldn't admit were dumb, but it was hard to ignore how stupid this latest thing had been.

"I'm glad you're alright," Sam said, looking concerned. Drunk and fire rarely ever mixed well, and he understood that sometimes you just did dumb things, sober or not.

"If you want to burn stuff though, I'm sure we can work something out. Make it cathartic, do effigies and everything. Maybe I can build an effigy bookshelf for you."

At that, Kate laughed, a little relieved. Given how stupid it was, she sort of expected more people to react like Jeff had, though she really did owe him an apology. But that was a little hard for her and she wasn't sure how to do it.

"It was just giving me all these books about DID," she explained, though that didn't really help the situation. "Just, like, hey, remember your mom? Remember how pissed at her you were? I don't know. I just kinda... lost it."

Sam thought back to some of the books he had gotten recently and decided that burning down the bookshelf was a perfectly acceptable response. Especially when it did stuff like give you crap about your mom.

"In that case, I think you were pretty justified and the bookshelf was asking for it. I've had similar urges lately and it wasn't even that big of an ass to me."

"Well, I'm here to let you know that it's not the delightful, sitcom-esque story I'm making it out to be," she said dryly, ducking into the water until just her head was above the surface.

"First, I got to be a total douche to my friend Jeff. He was trying to stop me and I think I called him the worst lawyer in the world. Then, like I said, jailbird. Seriously not fun."

Sam dove under the water and swam for a short ways while he considered that. He supposed that having that happen in real life would be rather sobering, as opposed a zany antic it might be on a sitcom like she said.

"I'm sure things aren't so bad with Jeff that they can't be fixed. I mean, you were wasted, that's got to earn you a little grace. Besides, I'm sure you've got one of the best pouty faces ever if you need to use it," he said.

"I do have a pretty sweet pouty face," Kate agreed, hoping Jeff would see it that way. Maybe if she was just really, really nice, he'd forgive her. Or he'd think something was wrong and that she was dying or something crazy like that.

"Other stuff happened that night, though. Good stuff," she said slowly. Were they allowed to talk about stuff like this? Sam was a guy, sure, but he was also one of her best friends.

"You totally deflowered Harry Potter, didn't you?" he asked, grinning at her. If so, Sam was glad that at least someone was getting some, even if he was maybe a little bit jealous.

Also, he should probably stop saying Harry's full name, but for some reason he it would feel to refer to him as just Harry, even if he should probably think of Kate's boyfriend as an actual person and not a famous literary character.

"Totally did," Kate answered, biting back a grin. Marshall knew, too, but that was about it. The island was strange, in that she had good friends, people she trusted, but she wasn't sure if she could talk to Britta about this and she was sure Hermione didn't want to hear. That left Jeff and Sam and her brother. She was also sure Jeff didn't want to hear any of it either.

"And then I left him in my room to go start my life of crime," she said.
