From behind her hiding spot among the chairs, Penny stared in shock at what was happening. Captain Hammer was actually going to shoot Billy. Despite everything that had happened during the speech, she had still thought he was generally a good person, just sort of a jerk. But no, instead of holding Billy for arrest, Captain Hammer was standing over ( Read more... )

It took a split second for Aidan to realize just what he was seeing on the beach. It looked liked someone badly injured, which was so odd for the island that it took him a moment to process that's what it really was.

"Hang on," Aidan said, rushing over to where she was and kneeling on the sand to look over her injuries. "You're going to be okay. Can you tell me what happened?"

"On it," Aidan told Dr. Grey as he continued to do the best with the bleeding as he could. He could see that Penny was starting to really feel the pain and was glad he would be able to get her something for it.

"Just hang on Penny," he said, continuing to use her name as he prepared the morphine. "I'm going to give you something for the pain. You've done great so far, but soon you'll be able to just rest."

With the wounds being what they were and where they were, Meredith knew they would have trouble covering her up and wasting the time to cut the shirt off now seemed like a dangerous idea, so she peeled it back instead, cleaning skin below Penny's ribs and applying local anesthetic. She had to be grateful for the lab crew and the time they spent making these things. "Penny," she said as she worked, picking up on the name Aidan used, "I'm going to be making an incision and inserting a chest tube. It shouldn't hurt, it's gonna drain the fluid and help you feel better, okay? You're gonna be fine."

Just like Meredith had said, Penny didn't feel any pain from the chest tube, and a few moments later she didn't feel much of anything at all. Morphine, luckily for her, worked almost instantly, and her body noticeably relaxed as the pain began to leave her. She let her eyes close, and while her breathing was still rough and shallow, the panicked edge it had had before was gone. She was still somewhat conscious, but without pain and fear motivating her to stay focused, her just mind retreated in a fuzzy sort of emptiness, oblivious to what was happening around her.

Aidan was glad to see that the morphine was working. He'd been injured like that a few times and it hurt like hell, things sticking through your chest were kind of a big deal. She seemed to relax though and still stayed conscious, which was good.

"Let me know when I can go get the blood transfusion set up," Aidan said, instantly moving in to start sopping up some of the blood so that Dr. Grey could see well enough to work on the wound.
